HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER / GOP: ABC News' John Parkinson: " John Boehner Re-Elected House Speaker" Rep. John Boehner was elected to a second term as House speaker today. But the vote for wasn't without drama. Nine Republicans voted against Boehner in support of another candidate. Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia received three votes, former Florida Rep. Allen West of Florida received two votes, Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan received one vote and Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho received one vote. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio and David Walker, the former U.S. comptroller general, also received one vote each. LINK

The Hill's Russell Berman, Erik Wasson and Molly Hooper: " Failed coup effort against Boehner highlights House GOP divisions" A group of dissident Republicans failed on Thursday to push Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) to a second ballot in his election as Speaker and potentially replace him as leader of the House. Twelve House Republicans broke from Boehner in a tense public roll-call vote, either by voting for someone else or deliberately not voting at all - five short of what would have been needed to force a second ballot. The Los Angeles Times' Lisa Mascaro: " Boehner remains speaker - barely - as new Congress convenes" Republican John A. Boehner narrowly won reelection as House speaker Thursday, but not without a very public display of dissent from within his ranks that launched what promises to be a turbulent 113th Congress in a divided Washington. The edgy vote for the speaker's job punctuated an otherwise picture-pretty day at the Capitol, as newly elected lawmakers arrived with fresh suits and haircuts, many with families in tow. LINK

The Washington Times' David Sherfinski: " Boehner has mixed House rules record" House Speaker John A. Boehner's lofty pledges to break with precedent and run Congress in a more inclusive, transparent manner ended up a mixed bag over the past two years, as he fulfilled many of his vows, but had others fall to political pressure or circumstances. The Ohio Republican oversaw the end of spending earmarks, but occasionally fell short of his pledge to give lawmakers the promised three days to read bills before they were scheduled to vote on them. Politico's Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan: " Conservatives rebel against Boehner" Conservative opposition to John Boehner's reelection as speaker on Thursday was more determined than it originally seemed, as a small band of hard-liners either flat-out opposed the speaker or simply abstained from casting a ballot. There were some signs that conservative resistance to Boehner was well-organized, at least by one member who has never been a big fan of the Ohio Republican. LINK

CONGRESS: USA Today's Jackie Kucinich: " Big push in new Congress for gun control" Supporters of tighter federal gun restrictions moved quickly Thursday, the first day of the new Congress, introducing bills in the wake of last month's deadly mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., that will set up a long and contentious fight over the shape of the nation's gun laws. Democratic Reps. Carolyn McCarthy of New York and Diana DeGette of Colorado refiled the bill they had promoted in earlier Congresses and said they hoped the environment for gun laws would improve in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 20 students and six adults Dec. 14. The Wall Street Journal's Sara Murray and Patrick O'Connor: " New Congress Faces Same Partisan Divisions" The new Congress convened Thursday to an all-too-familiar backdrop of looming fiscal showdowns, leaving incoming members to ready themselves for the same kind of divisive battles faced by the last Congress. Signs of discord were evident in the GOP ranks as nine Republicans voted for someone other than Rep. John Boehner (R., Ohio) to be speaker of the House. LINK

TREASURY SECRETARY TIMOTHY GEITHNER: The New York Daily News' Adam Edelman: " Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to leave at end of month: report" Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will step down at the end of the month, even if lawmakers haven't yet reached an agreement to extend the debt ceiling. Citing two people familiar with the situation, Bloomberg reported that Geithner, who has reportedly considering leaving the post for at least a year, will definitely leave at the end of January. FOREIGN AFFAIRS: The New York Times' Matthew Rosenberg: " Insider Attacks in Afghanistan Shape the Late Stages of a War" It was only after the young Afghan soldier's hatred of Americans had grown murderous that he reached out to the Taliban. The soldier, named simply Mahmood, 22, said that in May he told the insurgents of his plan to shoot Americans the next time they visited the outpost where he was based in northeastern Afghanistan. IMMIGRATION: The Washington Post's David Nakamura and Tara Bahrampour: " White House pushes forward on immigration ahead of bigger reform fight" The Obama administration's decision this week to ease visa requirements for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants represents its latest move to reshape immigration through executive action, even as the White House gears up for an uncertain political fight over a far-more-sweeping legislative package in the months ahead. ECONOMY: Bloomberg's Mike Dorning: " Obama Fights Republicans on Debt as Investors Seek Growth" Fresh from a budget fight so raw that the Republican speaker of the U.S. House cursed the Democratic leader of the Senate outside the Oval Office, President Barack Obama and Congress are heading for an even bigger confrontation over raising the nation's debt limit.
