Ive been making quilts for twenty years. In that time, I have amassed a huge stash of quilting supplies, books and fabric. Such a huge stash that it was overwhelming at times. Like most quilters, I was both proud and embarrassed by my huge assortment of fabric that I really did plan to use in making quilts. After the discovery, my fabric stash is now about 25% of what it had been and I had to claim a loss of over $5000 worth of damage. The quilts lost were all store-bought, but still valuable to me. It was not a happy morning.
In quilt embroidery, we pay a lot of attention to the storage of our water-soluble stabilizers. High humidity can melt them, while cold temperatures can make them brittle. Ive been lucky so far that my homes have always been in temperate climates. High humidity one day is balanced by desert-like dryness the next. With my fabrics, I got too complacent about their storage. The loss is as much my fault as that of the leaking radiator pipes.
When we chose our house in Greece, it was for the gorgeous views and the huge basement that I would use as my sewing studio. Intermittently leaking pipes and plumbers who would leave to get their tools and never return helped me decide that my embroidery quilting and expensive machines would be safer in the house. When three large houses were built in front of us, we lost the view. I did not this house much after the first six months and mourned for our second choice for the next three years.
While I knew the basement wasnt a safe place to store my fabrics and other quilting supplies, it was the best option. And, I was much too busy searching out new embroidery quilting designs for my quilts. It was much more interesting than worrying about fabric storage. I believe differently now.
We dont have a new home picked out yet, but I am insisting on one with a room large enough for my sewing machines, long-arm quilting setup, and the cabinets I already own for my quilting supplies and fabric. Once upon a time, all of this actually fit in a room that was ten feet square! So, I know its possible. Of course, my cabinets are going to seem empty now.
If your fabric and supply stash isnt in tip-top order, why not take some time to organize it and make sure its safe. It can be done in just a few minutes a day, which can coincide with your quilt embroidery stitching. Dont put yourself in the situation that I did.
On an up note, though, just think of all the new fabrics I can buy now that I have room for them!
