Anonymous declares Internet war on Syria

9 hrs.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Global hacking network Anonymous said it will shut down Syrian government websites around the world in response to a countrywide Internet blackout believed to be aimed at silencing the opposition to President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria was plunged into communication darkness on Thursday when Internet connectivity stopped at midday. Land lines and mobile phones networks were also seriously disrupted.

The Syrian government said "terrorists" had attacked Internet lines but the opposition and human rights groups suspect it to be the work of the authorities.

Opposition activists have used the Internet extensively to further their cause by publishing footage of aerial strikes and graphic images of civilian casualties. In the absence of a free press, they have used social media to disseminate information during the uprising and communicate with journalists abroad.

Anonymous, a loose affiliation of hacking groups that opposes Internet censorship, said it will remove from the Internet all web assets belonging to Assad's government that are outside Syria, starting with embassies.

By 1000 GMT on Friday, the website for Syria's embassy in Belgium was down but the embassy in China - which Anonymous said it would target first - was operating. Most government ministry websites were down although this could be due to the blackout.

Several networking experts said that it was highly unlikely that the lines had been sabotaged by anti-Assad forces.

CloudFlare, a firm that helps accelerate Internet traffic, said on its blog that saboteurs would have had to simultaneously sever three undersea cables into the port city of Tartous and also an overland cable through Turkey in order to cut off the entire country's Internet access.

"That is unlikely to have happened," CloudFlare said.

The government has been accused of cutting communications in previous assaults on rebel-held areas. Anonymous said Assad's government had physically "pulled the plug out of the wall".

"As we discovered in Egypt, where the dictator (Hosni) Mubarak did something similar - this is not damage that can be easily or quickly repaired," it added, referring to an Internet outage during the early days of the 2011 uprising in Egypt.

French foreign ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot said the communications cut was of a matter of "extreme concern".

"It is another demonstration of what the Damascus regime is doing to hold its people hostage. We call on the Damascus regime to reestablish communications without delay," he said.

Rebels have seized a series of army bases across Syria this month, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions and on Thursday fighting on the outskirts of the capital blocked access to the international airport.

More than 40,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, according to opposition groups.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, said the Internet cut could signal that Assad is seeking to hide the truth of what is happening in the country from the outside world.

Syrian authorities have severely restricted non-state media from working in the country.

The hacker collective has staged cyber attacks on the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency. Earlier this month, The Israeli government said it logged more than 44 million hacking attempts in just a few days during its military assault on Gaza after Anonymous waged a similar campaign.

Wedding Wisdom | Happy.fm

Which gets the most attention: the wedding or the relationship?

I call it wedding fever. It?s that stage you go through in your relationship when the wedding event dominates everything. Bookings, flowers, outfits, the wedding dress, and all the rest occupy every waking moment.

What music should be played? Who will we invite? What shall we eat? And, how long should the wedding ceremony be? Decisions, decisions! It?s like planning the Olympics? only smaller and with a cake.

Naturally, it?s a wonderful occasion and celebrating the coming together of two people in love with each other is a heart-warming event. That?s what makes a wedding unique. For its sheer sense of occasion, no housewarming, baby shower, or birthday party can hold a candle to a marriage gathering.

And yet, in so many weddings, something is missing. Yes, the couple love each other. That?s generally a given. But while there?s so much attention directed to the occasion, precious little consideration goes into developing the wedding couple?s relationship.

Once the hoo ha has died down, the couple driven off, and the guests have left, it?s on with the business of getting on. Yes, post wedding many married couples escape on a high expectation honeymoon that?s meant to magically ?make it all happen?. But, whether they do or they don?t, the important part has already started.

How we get on with each other is the crux of every relationship. But, for the most part, this essential element is left to chance. Despite spending a small fortune on a memorable wedding, most couples spend nothing on investing in how to love each other better in the years to come.

Maybe it?s an ego thing. ?I don?t need to learn how to love my partner better. After all, we?re getting married. Isn?t that enough?? As seasoned campaigners in love know these sound like famous last words. Being the relationship equivalent of Titanic directives, they reveal an alarming naivety, inviting post wedding disaster.

I know I?m being alarmist. After all, in most nations, a full 50% of marriages ?make it.? But, what about the other half? How many well-meaning weddings go ahead, only to founder a few short years later when the going gets rough?

If lovers getting married feel they deserve the best then they need to include some relationship counselling in the lead up to their wedding. By all means, they should read books on the subject and talk to people in long-term love relationships. By talking to couples who have been married for years and asking for advice they can see what is right and perhaps what?s not. By planning to still be in love when you?re old by learning what works and what doesn?t before you?ve begun is prudent sense.

Being in love 30 years on, Ruth and I are glad to be sharing life together as each other?s lover and best friend. Our wedding now is just a distant happy memory. It was lovely, but it?s not especially relevant. What mattered back then has either been refined or winnowed out. So anything remotely selfish, immature, or fickle, has long been thrown overboard to make room for a better life together as we keep on growing up.

If someone in your life is getting married soon and their wedding is swallowing their attention, encourage them to look further into their relationship. A good marriage, as you know, is a shelter for many and a haven of togetherness. While a bad marriage is, well, like a living hell. Nobody plans for the latter. Yet neither do they actually plan for the former either.

Paving the way for a happier, more loving relationship ahead is the best wedding investment anyone in love can make. If only we thought of it as a wedding essential and not just ?icing on the cake.?

Japan suspends dubious reconstruction projects

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's government has suspended 35 projects included in a budget for reconstruction from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami after criticism the spending was not directly related to recovery from the disasters.

As much as a fourth of the 11.7 trillion yen ($148 billion) budget had been earmarked for unrelated projects, including subsidies for a contact lens factory in another region and research whaling.

However, the 35 projects put on hold during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda involved spending of only 16.8 billion yen ($210 million).

No specific reason was given for each project, though Noda and other officials have vowed to cut spending not directly for reconstruction. Many of the projects in the budget were included on the pretext they might aid Japan's economic revival.

"Some of the projects are being deferred to 2013," Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told reporters in a regular briefing. "But Prime Minister Noda said the spending really must be committed to reconstruction."

Among the projects put on hold was a plan to boost the Japan "brand" through lecture tours, money earmarked to pay for Cabinet-sponsored discussions on "social inclusiveness," and quake-resistance renovations for various government ministries.

Minutes from a committee meeting held last month showed Cabinet ministers concluding that while projects unrelated to the disaster were legal, it would be better to focus spending on the disaster zone.

The committee adopted new guidelines this week requiring that reconstruction funds be disbursed through a special government account devoted to programs in the disaster area, which includes much of Japan's northeastern coast.

A notice on the website of the Reconstruction Ministry said the Finance Ministry and other government agencies would work to "strictly rectify" the budget, and may suspend other projects.

The government decided to boost spending on reconstruction from the 19 trillion yen ($237.5 billion) meant to be spent by the end of March 2015.

Progress on reconstruction has been hindered by a lack of local government staff and other experts, disagreements over how and whether to rebuild some towns obliterated by the tsunami, and the sheer scale of the destruction.

A report issued Tuesday showed only 47 percent of planned projects had begun work. About 60 percent of the 9.6 million tons of tsunami debris has been cleared, but only 11 percent of it processed. Reconstruction of fisheries and fishing ports and rehabilitation of farmland has also lagged.

Sunlight instantly turns ice water to steam using nanoparticles

16 hrs.

Sunlight and itsy bitsy flecks of metal or carbon are all that?s required to quickly vaporize icy-cold water, according to researchers who recently unveiled a new steam-generating process that could revolutionize industrial practices without the hangover of greenhouse gas emissions.

Steam is used throughout our world. It spins turbines to generate electricity and heats kettles used to brew beer. It is used to sterilize medical equipment and distill alcohol.?

But, generating steam typically requires tons of energy to heat and boil water. The most common sources of energy are coal, oil, and natural gas ? fossil fuels that when burned emit carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas that?s building up in the atmosphere and causing the planet?s climate to change.

Researchers at Rice University unveiled a method that uses light-absorbing nanoparticles submerged in water to convert solar energy directly into piping?hot?steam. It is so effective that it can even produce the?steam from ice water.

The tiny particles heat up so quickly that they instantly vaporize water, rather than dissipating the?heat into the surrounding fluid. Precisely how this works is a bit of a mystery, according to Naomi Halas, ?director of the nanophotonics laboratory at Rice University.

?There seems to be some nanoscale thermal barrier, because it is clearly making steam like crazy,? she told Technology Review.

The process has an overall efficiency of 24 percent, compared to about 15 percent efficiency for solar panels such as those on your neighbor?s roof. But generating electricity is unlikely the first application of the new technology, which was developed with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.?

Rather, it will be used for sanitation and water purification in developing countries, helping to stem the spread of disease. To that end, the Rice University team has already created a solar steam-powered autoclave to sterilize medical and dental instruments at clinics without access to electricity.

The technology could, however, also improve the efficiency and lower the cost of large-scale solar thermal energy generating plants, which use sunlight to warm up oil that is then used to heat water and generate steam to spin turbines.?

Generating steam directly with the nanoparticles would be 3 to 5 percent more efficient and result in a cost savings of about 10 percent due to the less complex design, Todd Otanicar, a mechanical engineer at the University of Tulsa, told Technology Review.?

For more information, check out the video below. A paper on the process was published Nov. 19 in the journal ACS Nano.?

Mars Rover Curiosity Celebrates 1st Birthday Off Earth

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity marked one year away from Earth Monday (Nov. 26), but the car-size robot's work on the Red Planet is just getting started.

Curiosity launched from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Nov. 26, 2011, then endured an eight-month cruise through deep space to the Red Planet. The $2.5 billion rover touched down on Aug. 5, executing an unprecedented series of maneuvers that saw it lowered to the Martian surface on cables by a rocket-powered sky crane.

Since that dramatic landing, Curiosity has driven 1,696 feet (517 meters) and returned more than 23,000 raw images to its handlers here on Earth, NASA officials said. But there's much more to come.

Curiosity is just 16 weeks into a two-year prime mission that aims to determine if its Gale Crater landing site can, or ever could, support microbial life. The rover carries 10 different science instruments to help it in this quest, including one called Sample Analysis at Mars, or SAM, which can identify organic compounds ? the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it.

SAM may already have detected something exciting. Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger, a geologist at Caltech in Pasadena, told NPR earlier this month that SAM's first tastes of Martian soil are providing data "for the history books."

Grotzinger and others on the Curiosity team will reveal what Curiosity has found on Monday (Dec. 3), during a presentation at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco.

At the moment, Curiosity is at a site that mission scientists have dubbed "Point Lake," which overlooks lower ground to the east. The rover team is scanning the landscape for targets for the first use of the rover's drill, which can bore 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) into solid rock.

Curiosity's ultimate destination is the base of Mount Sharp, a mysterious mountain that rises 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) from Gale Crater's center. These foothills show signs of long-ago contact with liquid water.

The rover could be ready to head toward Mount Sharp's interesting deposits ? which lie about 6 miles (10 km) away ? by the end of the year or so, Curiosity scientists have said.

Kickstarter: myLED Adds Another LED To Your iPhone

136ef75742da79a7820d7454c6682393_largeOne of Steve Jobs' biggest pet peeves was external LED lights on cellphones. Oh how he would storm through the Apple offices, harrumphing at the thought of a Motorola KRZR lighting up like a tiny Christmas tree. He'd probably be really angry at this new product, myLED, which is a tiny LED that's designed to light up when you get an iOS notification.

Seattle Seahawks cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner continue to deny that they have ever taken performance-enhancing substances despite facing four-game suspensions for testing positive.

According to Mike Garafolo of the USA Today, Sherman is saying that he unknowingly ingested Adderall prescribed to a teammate according to a person familiar with Sherman?s explanation. Sherman?s agent, Kevin Poston, would not speak on the specifics of the case but when presented with the scenario described Poston said, ?What appears is not always the case. Hopefully, when the facts come out, justice will prevail.?m

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network also reported the scenario described by Garafolo.

Sherman, however, is completely denying that?s what took place. In a series of texts Monday night, Sherman disputed the accounts being reported by the USA Today and NFL Network.

?It?s totally false,? Sherman said. ?It will be resolved in time and I have never taken anything.?

Sherman has denied ever taking Adderall since the suspensions were first reported on Sunday.

Browner?s agent, Peter Schaffer, also denied the claims against him client.

?I can tell you that Brandon Browner has no knowledge of how any illegal substance could have gotten into his system,? Schaffer said. ??He takes tremendous care of his body and he is very careful with what he puts into it. We?re exploring all avenues to try and figure out how any substance out of the ordinary would be in his system.?

Per Garafolo, Browner is already in the league?s substance-abuse program following an undisclosed incident while playing for the Denver Broncos in 2005. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com was on Sports Radio KJR in Seattle Monday morning and relayed Browner?s denial of taking any performance-enhancing substance knowing how frequently he is tested due to being in the substance-abuse program.

?[Browner]?s someone who?s tested regularly; up to three times a week,? La Canfora said. ?So he?s told people, ?look, I knew what I was up against. I don?t even drink a beer because I?m so wary of having a positive for anything.? So he?s been adamant that ?I?m not on anything. I?ve gone out of my way not to put any sort of substance, supplement, or anything other than what you would normally eat and drink.??

Schaffer said they received notice from the league about the positive tests last week. He said normally hearings for these matters are usually scheduled within 20 days of the notice being sent but circumstances could require it to take longer. Schaffer said he wasn?t sure how long it would take for this particular hearing to come about.

?It?s too early to tell what we?re going to need, what witnesses and evidence and experts are going to be required so there is no way to even guess at this point,? he said.

Until those appeals are resolved, both Browner and Sherman are eligible to play for the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that he fully expects to have them available for this Sunday?s game against the Chicago Bears.
