Hornell's St. Ann's feeling at home in United Presbyterian Church

Students at St. Ann's Academy may finish out their school year at the United Presbyterian Church, if the church agrees to a proposed lease, school officials said Friday.

Laura Picco, secretary of the school's Board of Directors, said the United Presbyterian Church is currently reviewing the lease. School officials are optimistic students will use facilities at the church for the remainder of the school year, she said.

The school's 22 students are currently housed in the church's education wing.

Students could not attend classes at the school's original intended location, 138 Main Street, at the beginning of the school year because of a missing certificate of occupancy.

Jerry O'Connor, president of the school's Board of Directors, said the space will still be utilized.

"We actually have a fundraising arm called St. Ann's Foundation of Hornell Inc., and that will be located in 138 Main in the corner, so we're generating some ideas about how to use that space," he said.

O'Connor said the school is looking into alternative locations for classes to be held for future years.

"We knew going into either location we would need more space probably next school year," Picco said.

The school is planning a ribbon cutting celebration for some time in November.

Picco said St. Ann's Academy is an opportunity for students to get more individualized attention. She said her son, a first grade student, is able to take math at a third grade level at the school, because of its multi-age group, multi-level design.

Other students who may be struggling in some areas are able to be placed where they can receive more help, she said.

"A big thing about our vision for the school was to be able to put kids academically where they need to be, not necessarily what grade, but where they'll be helped the most," she said.
