Cozen O'Connor Expands Insurance Practice in D.C. - The BLT: The ...

Updated 4:36 p.m.

The former managing partner for Chadbourne & Parke's Washington office has moved to Cozen O'Connor.

Mary Lopatto joins Cozen as a member in the firm's global insurance group. She focuses her practice on reinsurance dispute resolution, and has handled matters involving product liability, environmental allocation issues, asbestos liability, financial reinsurance, professional liability, workers compensation and catastrophic reinsurance issues, among others. She has represented clients in the United States, London and Bermuda markets on both the ceding and assuming side.

Lopatto also has experience handling international arbitrations subject to the Bermuda International Conciliation and Arbitration Act of 1993.

"Mary brings a significant wealth of experience and knowledge of the reinsurance industry, including her leadership of a major reinsurance trade organization," William Shelley, co-chairman of the firm's global insurance group, said in a written statement.

In an interview, Lopatto said that she chose to make the lateral move to Cozen because she wanted to work with attorneys who specialize in insurance and reinsurance.

"Chadbourne is a great firm, but it came down to a firm that has a much deeper commitment to insurance and reinsurance," Lopatto said. "I'm very excited to be the trailblazer in the D.C. office."

She said that part of Cozen's strategic plan is to grow the insurance and reinsurance practice in Washington. Hopefully, she added, having capabilities in other offices like London will help her practice grow.
