"Hey, I didn't put that there" - HypnoThoughts.com

I am at about Week 6 of my hypnotherapy course. I've put a couple of fellow students into trance (and returned the favor) and learned a little bit here and there about what hypnosis can be used for, NLP (very cursory intro), etc.

I've found out more about various types of inductions here on Hypnothoughts than I have in the course. I guess that's to be expected: you don't want to overwhelm the students. I can't wait to try some of them out, though.

One of the things I have really enjoyed about previous hypnotic experiences is the stuff that I didn't put into the picture. For example, when I picture a relaxing place, I'm well aware that I am putting the grass THERE and I've put some trees over THERE and it's up to me how blue the sky is. When something shows up in my visualization that I didn't intentionally put there, I get a little "hit" that makes me really want to do hypnosis again. That is the feeling I really enjoy about trance. For example, during one session my fellow student told me to walk to a glade in the forest (okay) and sit by the bank of a river (okay)...when suddenly a small, brightly-colored paper sailboat floated down the stream (whoa!).?

I can't seem to make this experience happen. When I've listened to sessions that purport to introduce me to my inner self, I either go into somnabulism (and remember nothing) or absolutely nothing happens with the visualization. I follow all of the steps, and I never get any of the things happening that the guiding voice tells me is supposed to happen.?

Likewise, I have not yet had anything remotely like the little sailboat happen when I do self-hypnosis. (I'm practicing self-hypnosis about 5 times a day -- it's frustrating because I know what being in trance feels like, I really like the feeling, and yet I can't induce it on command. Each self-hypnosis session for myself takes at least 10 minutes, and I have to tell myself to relax, to walk down steps, to really visualize my special place, etc.)?

Is there a term for "the thing I didn't put there" in hypnosis? Hallucination doesn't seem correct.?

Is there anything I should be doing to improve my experience of self-hypnosis? I know that John Cleesattel (and others) say that this experience is one you're supposed to allow and can't make happen, but certainly I'm showing up expecting to go into trance and it seems to be a tough sell regardless.?

Medicare to begin fining hospitals over readmitted patients

WASHINGTON (AP) -- If you or an elderly relative have been hospitalized recently and noticed extra attention when the time came to be discharged, there's more to it than good customer service.

As of Monday, Medicare will start fining hospitals that have too many patients readmitted within 30 days of discharge due to complications. The penalties are part of a broader push under President Barack Obama's health care law to improve quality while also trying to save taxpayers money.

About two-thirds of the hospitals serving Medicare patients, or some 2,200 facilities, will be hit with penalties averaging around $125,000 per facility this coming year, according to government estimates.

Data to assess the penalties have been collected and crunched, and Medicare has shared the results with individual hospitals. Medicare plans to post details online later in October, and people can look up how their community hospitals performed by using the agency's "Hospital Compare" website.

It adds up to a new way of doing business for hospitals, and they have scrambled to prepare for well over a year. They are working on ways to improve communication with rehabilitation centers and doctors who follow patients after they're released, as well as connecting individually with patients.

"There is a lot of activity at the hospital level to straighten out our internal processes," said Nancy Foster, vice president for quality and safety at the American Hospital Association. "We are also spreading our wings a little and reaching outside the hospital, to the extent that we can, to make sure patients are getting the ongoing treatment they need."

Still, industry officials say they have misgivings about being held liable for circumstances beyond their control. They also complain that facilities serving low-income people, including many major teaching hospitals, are much more likely to be fined, raising questions of fairness.

"Readmissions are partially within the control of the hospital and partially within the control of others," Foster said.

Consumer advocates say Medicare's nudge to hospitals is long overdue and not nearly stiff enough.

"It's modest, but it's a start," said Dr. John Santa, director of the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center. "Should we be surprised that industry is objecting? You would expect them to object to anything that changes the status quo."

For the first year, the penalty is capped at 1 percent of a hospital's Medicare payments. The overwhelming majority of penalized facilities will pay less. Also, for now, hospitals are only being measured on three medical conditions: heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia.

Under the health care law, the penalties gradually will rise until 3 percent of Medicare payments to hospitals are at risk. Medicare is considering holding hospitals accountable on four more measures: joint replacements, stenting, heart bypass and treatment of stroke.

If General Motors and Toyota issue warranties for their vehicles, hospitals should have some similar obligation when a patient gets a new knee or a stent to relieve a blocked artery, Santa contends. "People go to the hospital to get their problem solved, not to have to come back," he said.

Excessive rates of readmission are only part of the problem of high costs and uneven quality in the U.S. health care system. While some estimates put readmission rates as high as 20 percent, a congressional agency says the level of preventable readmissions is much lower. About 12 percent of Medicare beneficiaries who are hospitalized are later readmitted for a potentially preventable problem, said the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, known as MedPAC.

Foster, the hospital association official, said medication mix-ups account for a big share of problems. Many Medicare beneficiaries are coping with multiple chronic conditions, and it's not unusual for their medication lists to be changed in the hospital. But their doctors outside sometimes don't get the word; other times, the patients themselves don't understand there's been a change.

Another issue is making sure patients go to their required follow-up appointments.

Medicare deputy administrator Jonathan Blum said he thinks hospitals have gotten the message.

"Clearly it's captured their attention," said Blum. "It's galvanized the hospital industry on ways to reduce unnecessary readmissions. It's forced more parts of the health care system to work together to ensure that patients have much smoother transitions."

MedPAC, the congressional advisory group, has produced research findings that back up the industry's assertion that hospitals serving the poor, including major teaching facilities, are more likely to face penalties. But for now, Blum said Medicare is not inclined to grade on the curve.

"We have really tried to address and study this issue," said Blum. "If you look at the data, there are hospitals that serve a low-income patient mix and do very well on these measures. It seems to us that hospitals that serve low-income people can control readmissions very well."

Under Obama's health care overhaul, Medicare is pursuing efforts to try to improve quality and lower costs. They include rewarding hospitals for quality results, and encouraging hospitals, nursing homes and medical practice groups to join in "accountable care organizations." Dozens of pilot programs are under way. The jury is still out on the results.

My amount 1 piece of guidance is ?quit creating justifications for on your own.?

All too typically, I listen to explanations for why a individual isn?t going to want to take in right and physical exercise. It truly is like they are trying to convince me why they are unique, that the principles of diet & workout should not apply to them. They?re not, and the only particular person they?re trying to encourage is on their own. It impacts me none at all if they don?t perform out or take in proper, but it does squander my time if they ask me for aid and then use reasons to ignore everything I say or propose.

Because I started eating appropriate and functioning out routinely in about 2003, I have lost a total of 50 lbs, although I have gone up and down in people 8 several years. I started out at 195, and my lowest was 148 (12/09). I?m at the moment 160 and am more powerful and a lot more fit than I at any time have been in my lifestyle. I am back to donning clothing of the dimensions I wore in substantial university more than twenty years ago (and I weighed a mere 140 then).

What do you believe? Answer underneath!

Nanosciences: All systems go at the biofactory

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? In order to assemble novel biomolecular machines, individual protein molecules must be installed at their site of operation with nanometer precision. LMU researchers have now found a way to do just that. Green light on protein assembly!

The finely honed tip of the atomic force microscope (AFM) allows one to pick up single biomolecules and deposit them elsewhere with nanometer accuracy. The technique is referred to as Single-Molecule Cut & Paste (SMC&P), and was developed by the research group led by LMU physicist Professor Hermann Gaub. In its initial form, it was only applicable to DNA molecules. However, the molecular machines responsible for many of the biochemical processes in cells consist of proteins, and the controlled assembly of such devices is one of the major goals of nanotechnology. A practical method for doing so would not only provide novel insights into the workings of living cells, but would also furnish a way to develop, construct and utilize designer nanomachines.

In a major step towards this goal, the LMU team has modified the method to allow them to take proteins from a storage site and place them at defined locations within a construction area with nanometer precision. "In liquid medium at room temperature, the "weather conditions" at the nanoscale are comparable to those in a hurricane," says Mathias Strackharn, first author of the new study. Hence, the molecules being manipulated must be firmly attached to the tip of the AFM and held securely in place in the construction area.

Traffic signals prove the efficiency

The forces that tether the proteins during transport and assembly must also be weak enough not to cause damage, and must be tightly controlled. To achieve these two goals, the researchers used a combination of antibodies, DNA-binding "zinc-finger" proteins, and DNA anchors. "We demonstrated the method's feasibility by bringing hundreds of fluorescent GFP molecules together to form a little green man, like the traffic-light figure that signals to pedestrians to cross the road, but only some micrometers high," Strackharn explains.

With this technique, functional aspects of complex protein machines -- such as how combinations of different enzymes interact, and how close together they must be to perform coupled reactions -- can be tested directly. A further goal is to develop artificial multimolecular assemblies modeled on natural "cellulosomes," which could be used to convert plant biomass into biofuels. Strackharn points out the implications: "If we can efficiently build mimics of these 'enzymatic assembly lines' by bringing individual proteins together, we could perhaps make a significant contribution to the exploitation of sustainable energy sources." Burnt money, campus ban: Tidbits on Colo. shooter

FILE - This file photo provided on Sept. 20, 2012 by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office shows James Holmes. FILE - This file photo provided on Sept. 20, 2012 by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office shows James Holmes. Holmes, the suspect in a deadly movie theater attack in Colorado, threatened a professor before the shooting, leading the university to ban him from campus, prosecutors said in court documents released Friday, Sept. 28, 2012. (AP Photo/Arapahoe County Sheriff, File)

(AP) ? The suspect in the Aurora movie shooting case mailed "burnt currency," along with a notebook, to his psychiatrist before the attack. He threatened a professor and was banned from a university campus before withdrawing from its neuroscience graduate program. His defense team has added a psychiatrist.

Those were the few tidbits of information in hundreds of pages of heavily-redacted court documents released Friday, which serve as the best chance the public has to understand what happened before James Holmes allegedly opened fire at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie more than two months ago.

The documents shed little light on Holmes' possible motives or whether the university ignored warning signs about him. That's partly because Arapahoe County District Judge William B. Sylvester continued to keep under seal the key documents in the case ? the affidavit that lays out prosecutors' case against Holmes, and the search warrants that allowed them to gather evidence against him.

Holmes, 24, faces 152 charges in the July 20 shooting that killed 12 people and injured 58 others.

Some of the documents are entirely blacked out. In others, Sylvester's rulings on legal disputes, references to years-old case law and even copies of newspaper articles are redacted, along with information about the investigation.

The documents do shed a little more light on one of the main disputes in the case ? Holmes' threats against a professor, possibly the university psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, who has testified that she contacted campus police after her last meeting with Holmes June 11. Fenton, who testified Aug. 30, said she went to police to gather more information and communicate her "concern."

She did not refer to her concern as a threat.

Prosecutors contended that Holmes was barred from campus after making the threats. The University of Colorado has said that Holmes was denied access to nonpublic buildings on campus because he withdrew as a neuroscience graduate student, not for safety reasons.

A university spokeswoman did not return a call for comment on Friday. The university has previously refused to comment on how it handled Holmes, citing a gag order that Sylvester imposed. Before the gag order, university officials said their police force had no contact with Holmes and that the chief of the department knew nothing about him.

The defense team sought sanctions against prosecutors for contending Holmes had been barred from campus, arguing that the false statements could contaminate the jury pool. But Sylvester shot that down, ruling the statements were within legal bounds.

Defense attorneys did not return a call for comment Friday.

The most legally significant disclosure Friday was the inclusion of the psychiatrist on Holmes' defense team. Holmes' attorneys have said he is mentally ill.

"This is unusual in a normal case, but not surprising in this case," said criminal trial lawyer Dan Recht, former president of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar. "Presumably he's (the psychiatrist) the one who is going to opine on whether Holmes is insane or not.

"It's a foregone conclusion that the defense will plead not guilty by reason of insanity."

Other documents likely contain new information, but are blacked out. For example, in one pleading, attorneys describe how law enforcement handled the package that Holmes sent Fenton, which was discovered four days after the attack and also after Holmes allegedly booby-trapped his own apartment.

Authorities were so worried the package was also rigged that they X-rayed it and had a technician in a protective suit open it. What investigators saw when they realized the package was not dangerous, however, is redacted. All that is legible in the documents is a reference to the package containing a notebook with a post-it note and "burnt currency."

The records also show that authorities obtained text messages that Holmes sent a classmate. The documents do not say what those texts discussed.

In court, prosecutors suggested Holmes was angry at the failure of a once promising academic career and stockpiled weapons, ammunition, tear gas grenades, and body armor as his research deteriorated and professors urged him to get into another profession. Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Pearson said Holmes failed a key oral exam in June, was banned from campus and began to voluntarily withdraw from the school.

Documents filed in the case from now on will be public, unless prosecutors or defense attorneys ask they not be released.

More details on Afghan firefight video

Video captures an American soldier getting caught in gunfire with the Taliban in Afghanistan. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By Eric Zuckerman, NBC News

A dramatic video posted Wednesday on YouTube shows a U.S. soldier surviving a firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan?s Kunar Province.

The video, which was captured by a camera mounted to the soldier?s helmet, shows the cameraman pinned down by machine gun fire, getting shot several times and yelling, ?I?m hit! I?m hit!?

?I got hit a total of four times,? the cameraman wrote in his description of the video, which was provided to NBC News by the curator of a YouTube channel originally started to share about 100 videos from his own tour in Afghanistan and which now posts videos submitted by other combat veterans. The video was also posted on the Facebook page for Military Minds, an organization that aims to raise awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The source was unable to provide any other details beyond the cameraman?s own description of the event:

?I was heading down the face of the hill when we got hit. The rest of the squad was pinned down by machine gun fire. I didn?t start the video until a few minutes into the firefight for obvious reasons. I came out into the open to draw fire so my squad could get to safety. I was hit in the side of my helmet and my [camera] was shot off of my face.?

At? another point in the video, a round of ammunition knocks the soldier?s rifle out of his hands.

?When I picked the rifle back up, it was still functional, but the grenade launcher tube had a nice-sized 7.52-calliber bullet hole in it,? he wrote.

The soldier said that none of the rounds penetrated his body armor and that he made it home with no permanent injuries.

Feeling stressed out tied to heart disease risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who report feeling high levels of stress in their daily lives are more likely to develop heart disease than those who don't experience as much stress, according to a new review of earlier studies.

While the finding isn't surprising, the review gives a clearer picture of the relevant research to date.

"Everybody knows that stress is bad for your heart... but the evidence has been scattered out over the years," said Donald Edmundson, a professor at Columbia University Medical Center and one of the authors of the study.

Starting with a large British study from the 1960s that found an increased heart disease risk among poor people, researchers have linked stress to poor heart health.

And just this year, a study of 200,000 people in Europe showed that those who have stressful jobs are more likely to receive a diagnosis of heart disease than people whose jobs are less demanding and offer more freedom (see Reuters report of September 14, 2012).

To get a better grasp of what the research has had to say about people's own perception of stress and their heart disease risk, Edmundson and his colleagues gathered the results of six large studies on the topic.

Nearly 118,000 people participated in the studies, which surveyed the participants about the stress in their lives.

Some studies used a scale of how frequently or how severely the people felt stressed out, while others used a simple yes or no response to the question of whether someone had felt stressed.

At the beginning of the studies, none of the participants had been diagnosed with heart disease.

Over follow-up periods - anywhere from three to 21 years - the researchers tracked how many of those surveyed developed coronary heart disease, a condition in which the heart's arteries narrow due to cholesterol-rich deposits. Eventually, the buildups can snag the blood flow to the heart and cause heart attacks.

According to the National Institutes of Health, coronary heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the U.S., with more than 400,000 people dying from the condition each year.

Taken together, the studies found that people who felt stressed were 27 percent more likely later to be diagnosed with coronary heart disease, be hospitalized with the condition, or die from it.

Edmundson said the rise in heart disease risk related to stress is equivalent to smoking five cigarettes a day. However, there is no ironclad proof that stress is to blame for the heart problems.

One possible explanation is that stress raises the blood levels of hormones that can be take a toll on the heart.

In addition, people who are stressed might behave in ways that are less healthy, "like smoking, unhealthy dietary choices, physical inactivity etc. These mechanisms usually interact, making the situation much more complicated," said Dr. Demosthenes Panagiotakos, a professor at Harokopio University of Athens, who was not involved in the study.

In an email to Reuters Health, Panagiotakos said Edmundson's review supports the link between stress and heart disease, "however, this is based only on six relevant studies, a fact that makes the causal inference very difficult."

Edmundson said people can take steps to reduce their stress, such as exercise, yoga and meditation.

"Good old-fashioned exercise, good old-fashioned stress reduction techniques, are probably - the study hasn't been done yet - but are probably going to be good for healthy people to offset their risk of heart disease going forward," he said.

Lingerie Football League Previously Fired Ref Used As NFL ...

The Lingerie Football League revealed that one of the referees used as a replacement ref for the National Football League was actually fired from the LFL, an all-female football organization known for its skimpy uniforms and tough-as-nails players.

Mitch Mortaza, commissioner of the LFL, revealed Tuesday that NFL replacement ref Craig Ochoa had been fired from the Lingerie League. Mortaza said he was shocked to learn that a ref he had dismissed from the Lingerie League for poor performance is now an NFL replacement ref.

Ochoa was part of an entire officiating crew that Mortaza let go because of "several poorly called games."

"They were hurting our overall broadcast caliber," he told Yahoo! Sports. "And if it's opening up our players for potential injury, those things raise red flags here. Is it hurting overall credibility? When either of those two things are compromised, it's time to start thinking about parting ways."

Ochoa was used during the NFL's Hall of Fame marquee game, according to Yahoo! Sports. He has not been used in a regular season game, but is onboard as an alternate.

The NFL referee lockout began in June, when NFL refs were locked out of their jobs amid failed talks with the league over new contracts, Forbes notes. The NFL hoped to make refs fulltime, reduce their pay and cut their pensions. The plan served as a point of contention since the league rakes in about $10 billion per year. So, when talks failed, replacement refs were brought in for the start of the 2012/2013 season.

The replacement ref issue reached a boiling point during Monday Night Football when referee Wayne Elliott called a touchdown for the Seattle Seahawks, sending them to victory over the Green Pay Packers, 14-12.

Back in August, Mike Periera, former VP of Officiating for the NFL, noted that Ochoa had been fired from the LFL. At the time, the LFL did not comment. After the Seahawks-Packers game, the Lingerie League released an official statement about the use of replacement refs (via New York Daily News):

Due to several on-field occurrences of incompetent officiating, we chose to part ways with a crew which apparently is now officiating in the NFL. We have a lot of respect for our officials but we felt the officiating was not in line with our expectations... We have not made public comment to date because we felt it was not our place to do so. However in light of tonight's event, we felt it was only fair that NFL fans knew the truth as to who are officiating these games.

Coaches and fans alike are worried about the safety of the players, as well as bad calls ruining a team's shot at the Super Bowl.

The NFL also released a statement saying that the league "supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review," the Daily News notes.

Free Pets to Good Home ? Blog Archive ? Applying For Dog - First

On deciding to buy a pet dog, it is important to let them have good care and coaching. It not only becomes an advantage to you, but it also works well for understanding your dog and giving it a more comfortable disposition. With this being said, dog training in Brisbane is becoming rampant.

Those who have a passion for animals especially canines believe that they too ought to be taken care of properly. Supposedly, the best approach is the art of dog whispering but several procedures are available such as the Obedience Training and Safety Coaching.

Society has become aware and conscious of the significance of these kinds of schooling. We have become more mindful in determining specific problematic behaviours with pet dogs.

Though a lot of other companies believe a variety of training courses that aren???t necessarily the same as the philosophy of the art of dog whispering, we still give improvement to how you and your dog communicate. This signifies that you will be educated how to deal with specific problems with your canine instead of being naïve and maltreating them by kicking or screaming at them.

Such firms have discovered a deeper understanding about how a canine acts and the correct solution to take. That???s why Instructors are required to teach the owners of ways on how to correctly react to dog behaviour such as these: disobeying listening to particular instructions, having separation anxiety, being aggressive, harmful and hyper.

Although, this particular company in Brisbane is very adamant in promoting the art of dog whispering. Because of its natural and respective approach in both communicating with your canine and how they behave, they have figured it has become the most effective approach in recent years due to considerable testing and research from earlier ordeals.

It was based on the way canines naturally communicate with each other, making it instantly comprehended, and creating an instinctive willingness to cooperate. It makes it possible for you to become a responsible, effective and loving leader and create a deep connection with your dog where you can communicate naturally through body language, energy, voice, eye contact, touch and thought. Given the power to have the relationship and lifestyle you want with your pet dog and help you fulfill them by knowing their real inner desires.

These trainings may differ very much from each other but understanding what purpose you have for your dog is what matters. Depending on your lifestyle, diverse needs and functions should be considered. Finding the proper dog training in Gold Coast may need you to invest on time and energy for the most efficient business for you and your pet but it will never hurt to canvas for the right one.

Chemist's education questioned in drug lab scandal

BOSTON (AP) ? A chemist whose alleged mishandling of drug samples has thrown thousands of criminal cases into question testified under oath that she holds a master's degree in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, but school officials say they have no record of her receiving an advanced degree or taking graduate courses there.

Defense attorneys say that if Annie Dookhan lied about receiving a master's degree, it causes even more credibility problems for her work at the lab.

"If, in fact, she falsified her education or qualifications, we are even more deeply concerned about what she might have done in terms of testing the drugs," said Anne Goldbach, forensics services director for the Committee for Public Counsel Services, the state's public defender agency.

State police say Dookhan tested more than 60,000 drug samples submitted in the cases of about 34,000 defendants during her nine years at the lab. She resigned in March amid an internal investigation by the Department of Public Health. After state police took over the lab in July as part of a state budget directive, they said they discovered her alleged violations were much more extensive than previously believed and went beyond sloppiness into "malfeasance" and "deliberate mishandling" of drug samples.

Dookhan has not responded to repeated requests for comments from The Associated Press. No one appeared to be at her home in Franklin on Tuesday. Her husband and father did not respond to requests for comment on her claim that she received a master's degree.

Asked about her educational background when she testified under oath during the 2010 trial of Larry Blue, a Boston man charged with cocaine trafficking and weapons offenses, Dookhan said she had a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a master's degree in chemistry, both from the University of Massachusetts.

DeWayne Lehman, a spokesman for UMass-Boston, confirmed that Dookhan received a bachelor of science in biochemistry from the school in 2001, but said there is no record of her receiving a master's degree in chemistry, as she listed on her resume and said in sworn testimony, according to a transcript.

"We have no record of her doing subsequent graduate work at our campus," Lehman said.

The registrar's office at UMass-Boston also said it had no record of her receiving a master's degree, as did officials at UMass campuses in Lowell, North Dartmouth and Amherst. The Worcester campus does not offer a master's degree program in chemistry.

Blue was convicted of trafficking between 14 and 28 grams of cocaine, a drug violation in a school zone, possession of marijuana and weapons charges. He was sentenced to 10 years and one day in prison.

Blue's trial lawyer, Arnold Abelow, said that if Dookhan lied about her education, it calls her testimony about the drugs into question.

"If she's fudging her qualifications as being an expert, then how can you trust her analysis of the drugs?" Abelow said.

State police have not said exactly what Dookhan allegedly did wrong at the lab.

But Max Stern, president of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said he was told in a meeting with Gov. Deval Patrick and other administration officials that Dookhan is accused of deliberately tampering with some drug samples, including the weight of the samples, which can affect the length of prison sentences given to people convicted of drug offenses.

Attorney General Martha Coakley is conducting a criminal investigation. Dookhan has not been charged.

Investigators have not described Dookhan's possible motive for mishandling drug samples.

It is also unclear why she would fabricate having a master's degree.

A spokesman for the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, which oversees the Department of Public Health, did not respond to questions about the educational requirements for chemists at the lab or if obtaining a master's degree would have led to a pay increase for Dookhan.

The Supercomputer That Houses an Entire Universe [Monster Machines]

Over a span of two weeks in October, the Mira supercomputer will crank away nonstop, processing quadrillions of operations every second—something that few other machines are currently capable of. It will simultaneously track trillions of particles as they move, expand, and react to each other according to the laws of physics. This simulation will have to use everything mankind has learned about the movement of objects. If successful, it will not only confirm what we've suspected, but will also give us a deeper understanding of how the cosmos came to be. Mira, in short, is simulating the history of our universe. Mali asks U.N. for "immediate" action on force to recapture north

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Mali has asked the United Nations to approve an "immediate" mandate for an international force to help it recover northern parts of the country controlled by Islamist militants and drug traffickers, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Monday.

The West African country descended into chaos in March when soldiers toppled the president, leaving a power vacuum that enabled Tuareg rebels to seize nearly two-thirds of the country. But Islamist groups, some allied with al Qaeda, then hijacked the rebellion in the north to impose strict Islamic law.

Citing a letter sent by Mali's interim leaders to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on September 18, Fabius said Mali had requested a U.N. Security Council resolution under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter to mandate an international force "to help the Malian army to reconquer the occupied areas of northern Mali."

Chapter 7 allows the council to authorize actions ranging from diplomatic and economic sanctions to military intervention.

"For several months Mali has been confronted by an unprecedented security crisis in northern areas (and has been) occupied by armed groups including terrorists, drug traffickers and all types of criminals," Fabius, reading from the letter, told reporters.

"The Malian government wants the immediate military presence of this force to support Mali's security forces to carry out this mission."

A spokesman for Ban confirmed the letter had been received and said it was being studied.

Fabius said Mali's request would be discussed at a high-level meeting on the situation in the Sahel on Wednesday during the U.N. General Assembly and that Paris had begun talks with other Security Council members on how to proceed.

The Security Council on July 5 endorsed political efforts by the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to end unrest in Mali, but stopped short of backing military intervention there.

While Mali's request is the next step in the process, the Security Council is unlikely to provide a mandate for ECOWAS to intervene militarily until it outlines a more detailed strategy, including the number of troops and costs of the operation.

The council expressed in a statement on Friday a "readiness to consider a feasible and actionable proposal from ECOWAS."

Mali's interim leader, Dioncounda Traore, made a formal request to ECOWAS earlier this month for military assistance.

WESTERN SKEPTICISM

The West African bloc in turn mapped out a three-phase operation to reclaim northern Mali, but Traore only requested troops be deployed for the last phase and quarrelling between Bamako and ECOWAS over the deployment of troops in the Mali capital has held up the process.

Western diplomats have privately expressed skepticism about ECOWAS's current plans and it is also unclear whether Russia would support a resolution allowing military intervention.

France, Mali's former colonial ruler, has promised to provide logistical support and share intelligence as part of a future intervention in Mali but has ruled out directly sending troops to the country partly because al Qaeda's North African arm is holding French hostages.

"France is in the direct line of fire," Fabius said. "While there isn't a specific threat we have to remain extremely vigilant."

Regional and Western governments have compared the situation in Mali and the wider Sahel to Afghanistan. (Editing by Eric Beech)

Making Family Game Night Fast, Delicious, & Fun! #DipDipHooray ...

My family loves board games.?? But because my children are still young (almost 3, 5, and 8), they have a limited attention span.? My husband, Father Geek, has a plethora of games waiting on the shelf of his office for when they have greater abilities.? But for now, we like to keep our game nights simple.? Fast and yummy food, with simple, easy to play games.?? The time we share together as a family creating memories is really what it is all about!

Most nights of the week, I make homemade meals for my family.? It is work, but I consider it my contribution.? But sometimes it just makes sense to make an easy meal.? Too much cooking time can take away from family time.? Obviously I wouldn?t recommend eating prepackaged food all the time, but a quick fix every now and again is a great thing indeed:)

This is supper.? Okay, okay we had a salad too.? But it just doesn?t get any easier than this.?? And of course, the kids loved it!!? Through out the meal each kid would periodically say, ?dip, dip, HOORAY!?.? Chicken nuggets, french fries, and ketchup for supper?? This rules!

After a quick trip to Walmart, I was easily able to pick up all the necessary supplies for our family game night- including the cute dipping bowls.? Interested in my shopping trip??? Check out my Google + story.

Picking up some ketchup, fries, and chicken nuggets is so easy!

In the twenty or so minutes while dinner was cooking, I set the table for our fun.? The kids were especially delighted by the fun dipping bowls!

In no time at all, we were ready to chow down!

Daddy?s included!

My five year old loves ketchup so much even dips his spinach in it!

What a great meal!

The spark in his eyes, cues me in that he is up to something??

Oh know you don?t!!!

Don?t drink the ketchup!!!

After our ketchup feast, I mean supper, it?s time to bring out the games!

My boys first choice?? Star Wars Trouble!

With three little boys in the house, it?s just a given that anything Star War related is going to be a hit!

In this game R2D2 makes noises when you push down on the dice bubble!

And then inspired by the DipToPlay.com game of the week, we played a game of Pictureka!

I discovered Pictureka as the Game of the Week by visiting DiptoPlay.com.? By uploading the UPC codes from my Tyson chicken nuggets, Ore-Ida french fries, and Heinz ketchup I was able to unlock the Game of the Week and even play the online version.? As I write this, the Game of the Week has now changed to Jenga.? I love that game!? And the online version is completely addicting!

We took our chance with the card version of Pictureka.? We actually own quite a few Hasbro card games.? They are shorter than traditional board games, which is great with small children.

One of our new favorites is Clue Suspect.

This new version takes the traditional game of Clue and places it on fast forward without the game board.? My husband and I both thought it was brilliant!

By now my younger two boys were in bed and my oldest had a fun time handing out with the adults:)

And then of course I brought out dessert! Yum!

We had a fun time together with Nana playing games.

Do you have family game nights?

What games do you play? Do you look for easy meals during this special family time?

I can?t wait until my children are older and I can beat them at Monopoly:)

Be sure to visit DiptoPlay.com to join in the the Family Game Night phenomenon.

A clock that will last forever: Proposal to build first space-time crystal

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Imagine a clock that will keep perfect time forever, even after the heat-death of the universe. This is the "wow" factor behind a device known as a "space-time crystal," a four-dimensional crystal that has periodic structure in time as well as space. However, there are also practical and important scientific reasons for constructing a space-time crystal. With such a 4D crystal, scientists would have a new and more effective means by which to study how complex physical properties and behaviors emerge from the collective interactions of large numbers of individual particles, the so-called many-body problem of physics.

A space-time crystal could also be used to study phenomena in the quantum world, such as entanglement, in which an action on one particle impacts another particle even if the two particles are separated by vast distances.

A space-time crystal, however, has only existed as a concept in the minds of theoretical scientists with no serious idea as to how to actually build one -- until now. An international team of scientists led by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has proposed the experimental design of a space-time crystal based on an electric-field ion trap and the Coulomb repulsion of particles that carry the same electrical charge.

"The electric field of the ion trap holds charged particles in place and Coulomb repulsion causes them to spontaneously form a spatial ring crystal," says Xiang Zhang, a faculty scientist with Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division who led this research. "Under the application of a weak static magnetic field, this ring-shaped ion crystal will begin a rotation that will never stop. The persistent rotation of trapped ions produces temporal order, leading to the formation of a space-time crystal at the lowest quantum energy state."

Because the space-time crystal is already at its lowest quantum energy state, its temporal order -- or timekeeping -- will theoretically persist even after the rest of our universe reaches entropy, thermodynamic equilibrium or "heat-death."

Zhang, who holds the Ernest S. Kuh Endowed Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California (UC) Berkeley, where he also directs the Nano-scale Science and Engineering Center, is the corresponding author of a paper describing this work in Physical Review Letters (PRL). The paper is titled "Space-time crystals of trapped ions." Co-authoring this paper were Tongcang Li, Zhe-Xuan Gong, Zhang-Qi Yin, Haitao Quan, Xiaobo Yin, Peng Zhang and Luming Duan.

The concept of a crystal that has discrete order in time was proposed earlier this year by Frank Wilczek, the Nobel-prize winning physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While Wilczek mathematically proved that a time crystal can exist, how to physically realize such a time crystal was unclear. Zhang and his group, who have been working on issues with temporal order in a different system since September 2011, have come up with an experimental design to build a crystal that is discrete both in space and time -- a space-time crystal. Papers on both of these proposals appear in the same issue of PRL (September 24, 2012).

Traditional crystals are 3D solid structures made up of atoms or molecules bonded together in an orderly and repeating pattern. Common examples are ice, salt and snowflakes. Crystallization takes place when heat is removed from a molecular system until it reaches its lower energy state. At a certain point of lower energy, continuous spatial symmetry breaks down and the crystal assumes discrete symmetry, meaning that instead of the structure being the same in all directions, it is the same in only a few directions.

"Great progress has been made over the last few decades in exploring the exciting physics of low-dimensional crystalline materials such as two-dimensional graphene, one-dimensional nanotubes, and zero-dimensional buckyballs," says Tongcang Li, lead author of the PRL paper and a post-doc in Zhang's research group. "The idea of creating a crystal with dimensions higher than that of conventional 3D crystals is an important conceptual breakthrough in physics and it is very exciting for us to be the first to devise a way to realize a space-time crystal."

Just as a 3D crystal is configured at the lowest quantum energy state when continuous spatial symmetry is broken into discrete symmetry, so too is symmetry breaking expected to configure the temporal component of the space-time crystal. Under the scheme devised by Zhang and Li and their colleagues, a spatial ring of trapped ions in persistent rotation will periodically reproduce itself in time, forming a temporal analog of an ordinary spatial crystal. With a periodic structure in both space and time, the result is a space-time crystal.

"While a space-time crystal looks like a perpetual motion machine and may seem implausible at first glance," Li says, "keep in mind that a superconductor or even a normal metal ring can support persistent electron currents in its quantum ground state under the right conditions. Of course, electrons in a metal lack spatial order and therefore can't be used to make a space-time crystal."

Li is quick to point out that their proposed space-time crystal is not a perpetual motion machine because being at the lowest quantum energy state, there is no energy output. However, there are a great many scientific studies for which a space-time crystal would be invaluable.

"The space-time crystal would be a many-body system in and of itself," Li says. "As such, it could provide us with a new way to explore classic many-body questions physics question. For example, how does a space-time crystal emerge? How does time translation symmetry break? What are the quasi-particles in space-time crystals? What are the effects of defects on space-time crystals? Studying such questions will significantly advance our understanding of nature."

Peng Zhang, another co-author and member of Zhang's research group, notes that a space-time crystal might also be used to store and transfer quantum information across different rotational states in both space and time. Space-time crystals may also find analogues in other physical systems beyond trapped ions.

"These analogs could open doors to fundamentally new technologies and devices for variety of applications," he says.

Xiang Zhang believes that it might even be possible now to make a space-time crystal using their scheme and state of the art ion traps. He and his group are actively seeking collaborators with the proper ion-trapping facilities and expertise.

"The main challenge will be to cool an ion ring to its ground state," Xiang Zhang says. "This can be overcome in the near future with the development of ion trap technologies. As there has never been a space-time crystal before, most of its properties will be unknown and we will have to study them. Such studies should deepen our understandings of phase transitions and symmetry breaking."

This research was supported primarily by Miller Professorship and Ernest S. Kuh endowed Chair at UC Berkeley, and the National Science Foundations' Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center.
