Shocker: Samsung introducing new HDTV at CES, albeit with 'unprecedented new shape'

Image

How do you break the silence on one of the slowest news days of the year? Well, if you're Samsung, you tease the obvious. The Korean company has been counting down the days till CES with mini-previews of upcoming HD products -- first hinting at a refurbished Smart Hub on Christmas and today confirming that a new Smart TV will indeed be unveiled next week. But not just any TV; Samsung Tomorrow is drumming up anticipation for "an unprecedented new TV shape" to be unveiled in Vegas. From the photo, it looks like a monitor in the portrait form factor, -- and a transparent one, at that -- but we won't have to hold our horses too long before we learn more. In the meantime, you can check out the video below the break.

UFC 155 results: Junior dos Santos shows many admirable traits in decisive defeat

The resilience, heart and durability of Junior dos Santos were all relatively unknown attributes coming into UFC 155 last night (Dec. 29, 2012), but thanks to a savage Cain Velasquez mauling, fight fans now know that "Cigano" possesses the grit and mettle that can make a good mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter a great one.

Despite getting drubbed in a decision loss to the overwhelming Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 last night (Dec. 29, 2012), losing his heavyweight title belt in the process, Junior dos Santos showed many things previously unseen in absorbing his first loss in 10 Octagon performances:

A granite chin, resilience and an amazing ability to keep battling despite being completely exhausted and possibly out on his feet.

Looking back on the bout -- and I'll have to watch it again to confirm my theory -- but I'm pretty sure I've never seen a guy look so exhausted, so early, and absorb so much punishment while battling over five rounds. If you had to take odds in the first round whether or not dos Santos could survive for more, you would've gotten some long ones.

He simply looked spent three minutes in.

Perhaps it was the shock of Velasquez's opening-moments assault, where he simply jumped on the Brazilian and never relented, getting the better of exchanges and making him work at a fast rate. Whatever the issue, almost every other heavyweight would've broken.

But, dos Santos didn't.

Even terribly gassed by the third, he still managed to display amazingly good takedown defense, wresting himself free time and again as Velasquez uncorked an endless series of attempts to get him down, eventually getting them through sheer attrition. It's scary to think of how good dos Santos might have been last night, if he'd had the kind of conditioning he's shown in previous fights.

He was exhausted and unable to even hold his hands up in defense, his sole method of defense was either pulling away or eating shots as they bounced off his head.

It's to Velasquez's credit that he was able to implement and stick with a gameplan that seemed almost foolhardy in the opening moments -- I was sure dos Santos was going to catch him with something, given how aggressively Velasquez was pressing forward, particularly when he left gaping holes in his defense, but perhaps "Brown Pride" knew something we didn't.

Dos Santos might have a bit of front-runner in him offensively, and be the kind of guy who doesn't necessarily adjust well once he's taken out of his groove, but he's one hell of a tough guy to finish, and last night, ironically enough, showed the kind of mettle we always wondered whether or not he had.

It's just too bad his cardio and offensive weren't in the fight long enough for it to matter outside of a moral victory.

Englishman wakes up from stroke speaking fluent Welsh

Disclaimer: this post is not intended to encourage the harming of people, animals, or property. Rather, these stories are to be used as creative writing springboards.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/9767191/Englishman-wakes-up-from-stroke-speaking-fluent-Welsh.html

Alun Morgan, 81, was evacuated to Wales during the Second World War but left 70 years ago.

During his time there he was surrounded by Welsh speakers but never learned the language himself.

He left the country aged 10 and lived his life in England and recently suffered a severe stroke.

But when Mr Morgan regained consciousness three weeks later, doctors discovered he was speaking Welsh and could not remember any English.

It is thought that the Welsh Mr Morgan heard as a boy had sunk in without him knowing and was unlocked after he suffered the stroke.

Mr Morgan, who is retired and lives with his wife Yvonne in Bathwick, Somerset, is now being taught to speak English again.

"I'd not lived in Wales since I was evacuated there during the war. Gradually the English words came back, but it wasn't easy,'' he said.

Mr Morgan had been watching the lunchtime news when his wife noticed he was not responsive and called an ambulance.

He was rushed into hospital where he spent three weeks being stabilised and assessed.

Doctors diagnosed Mr Morgan with aphasia, a form of brain damage which causes a shift in the brain's language centre.

He was helped by the Communication Support Service, run by the Stroke Association in Bath.

In 2012 grandmother Kay Russell, 49, of Bishop Cleeve in Gloucestershire, suffered a migraine and began speaking in a French accent.

Sarah Colwill, 35, of Plymouth, Devon, also suffered a migraine and began speaking with a Chinese accent.

Doctors say they suffered Foreign Accent Syndrome, a condition which damages the part of the brain that controls speech and word formation.

More than 150,000 people have a stroke every year in the UK, and a third end up with aphasia as a result.

Chris Clark, Stroke Association?s UK Director of Life After Stroke Services said:

?Stroke can have a big affect on individuals and lead to personality and physical changes. With a stroke, blood supply to the brain is cut off and in the areas starved of oxygen, brain cells die and damage can be caused.

?Aphasia is caused by damage to the areas of the brain responsible for language.

"As a result, individuals who were previously able to communicate through speaking, understanding, reading and writing become more limited in their ability to do so."

GMD Smart Rotate Adds Screen Rotation Customization for Android Phones

GMD Smart Rotate Adds Screen Rotation Customization for Android PhonesAndroid: If you have a new Samsung Galaxy Note II (like I do) you probably enjoy Smart Rotation, a feature that rotates your display based on where the front-facing camera detects your face instead of using the accelerometer. Now any Android user can have this option with GMD Smart Rotate.

The app can also keep your screen from turning off while you're looking at the display, force rotations on applications you normally cannot, and in the pro version you can specify which apps should and should not rotate.

It is that last feature that is causing me to consider paying the modest $1.99 for the pro unlock key even though the other features already exist in my Galaxy Note II. Non-Galaxy owners should definitely consider the app.

Porsche faces more VW lawsuits after court win

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Porsche SE shares surged on Friday after it won a dismissal of a U.S. lawsuit by 26 hedge funds, one of several legal actions over its purchase of shares in Volkswagen , Europe's largest carmaker.

Posche shares were trading 6.3 percent higher at 1009 GMT, but analysts warned the German company's triumph in court hinged on a legal formality rather than the substance of the case.

On Thursday, a five-justice panel of the New York State appeals court in Manhattan found Porsche had established that the state was the wrong place in which to bring the lawsuit.

The hedge funds now have 30 days to decide whether to pursue the case in the Court of Appeals, New York's highest state court.

"The decision is made with regard to the jurisdiction and not on a claim itself," DZ Bank analyst Michael Punzet said, adding other lawsuits seeking damages were ongoing.

A $2 billion lawsuit brought by other hedge funds in a U.S. federal court is pending.

Porsche was not immediately available for comment on Friday. The company has previously said the hedge funds' lawsuits are without factual and legal merit.

Last week, prosecutors in Porsche's hometown of Stuttgart announced market manipulation charges against former Chief Executive Wendelin Wiedeking and former Chief Financial Officer Holger Haerter tied to VW share purchases. The defendants' lawyers denied wrongdoing by their clients.

In the case dismissed by the New York State appeals court, hedge funds including Glenhill Capital LP, David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital LP and Chase Coleman's Tiger Global LP had accused Porsche of causing more than $1 billion of losses by cornering the market in VW shares.

The funds accused Porsche of engineering a "massive short squeeze" in October 2008 by quietly buying nearly all freely traded ordinary VW shares in a bid to take over the company, despite publicly stating it had no plans to take a 75 percent stake.

When Porsche revealed it had amassed control of roughly three-quarters of VW, shares of VW soared, briefly making the Wolfsburg-based carmaker the world's biggest company by market value. The surge caused losses for hedge funds that had bet on a decline in the stock price.

Former CEO Wiedeking's attempts to take over VW overwhelmed Porsche's finances, forcing it to sell its sportscar business Porsche AG to VW instead.

Christchurch PR Jobs Provide Challenges for Professionals... | Stuff ...

The merger of Christchurch schools and the launch of an earthquake recovery plan were among the toughest public relations jobs in 2012.

BlacklandPR has named the bungled announcement of the schools shake-up in September the hardest job of the year, and the release of the Christchurch Central Development Unit's (CCDU) central-city blueprint the third toughest.

Company director Mark Blackham said factors in the?education announcement would "challenge the world's best PR exponents".

"Christchurch schools have to be reorganised, thousands of people will be affected and all of them fear change that affects their children's educational futures," he said.

The schools merger announcement led to a backlash in Christchurch, with public protests and Government promises of further consultation.

Blackham said the CCDU plan was released after a "long period of dispute and frustration", but the public had "reserved judgment" on it.

Christchurch PR experts said consultation and empathy were the key to successful communication.

Erin Jamieson, of Convergence PR, said genuine consultation was important in post-earthquake Christchurch.

"It has been a challenging year but it has also been a very interesting year. Communications people have worked on projects that they never dreamed they would be taking on," she said.

"The whole challenge is ensuring organisations really are consulting. There are a lot of organisations that really need to consult properly and not just inform.

"Given what everyone has been through, there is an expectation that the community do have a right to have a say. Organisations really need to respect that rather than just pay lip service."

PR consultant Ali Jones said Christchurch issues needed to be handled with "humanity and empathy".

"You need to be based here to understand the issues. You are living it then," she said.

"You are hearing the news every day on the radio and reading the paper and talking to mums on the school run. Unless you are living here, you can't understand what is happening and what people require.

"The whole thing about good communication is the humanity and empathy, and if that is not there you run the risk of getting things wrong, as we have seen."

Winter storm whips into Northeast

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? The death toll from a powerful winter storm that pushed through the nation's midsection into the Northeast has risen to 7.

Officials in Ohio are blaming the bad weather for a crash that killed an 18-year-old girl, who lost control of her car Wednesday afternoon and smashed into an oncoming snow plow on a highway northeast of Cincinnati.

The storm is expected to drop one to two feet of snow on parts of the Northeast just a day after it swept through the nation's middle, dumping a record snowfall in Arkansas and ruining holiday travel plans.

The National Weather Service says the Northeast's heaviest accumulations will be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states before the storm heads to Canada on Friday.

Despite the wet weather, no flights are delayed Thursday morning cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Families across the United States will have to rely on other sources of entertainment after Netflix's video streaming service was hit by a Christmas Eve outage.

The company based in Los Gatos, Calif., apologized in a company tweet for the outage Monday night.

The company says on its Twitter page that the outage was caused by "some of Amazon's cloud infrastructure." Netflix says it was working with Amazon engineers to restore the outage, which a company spokesman told the Wall Street Journal stretched "across the Americas."

Attempts to reach Netflix by The Associated Press were unsuccessful.

(AP) ? Hawaii Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz on Wednesday was appointed the state's next U.S. senator, bucking the dying wishes of U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye to win the support of Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

Schatz, a 40-year-old former nonprofit CEO who ran with Abercrombie for the state's top two offices in 2010, beat out U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The three candidates were selected by state Democrats earlier in the day.

Four days after eulogizing Inouye in the courtyard of the Hawaii Capitol, Abercrombie said he had to consider more than just Inouye's wishes in filling his seat.

"Of course Sen. Inouye's views and his wishes were taken into account fully, but the charge of the central committee, and by extension then myself as governor, was to act in the best interests of the party ... the state and the nation," Abercrombie said.

"The law makes explicitly clear, as do the rules of the Democratic Party, that while everyone's voice is heard and everyone's view is taken into account, nonetheless, no one and nothing is preordained."

Under state law, the successor had to come from the same party as the prior incumbent.

Inouye, by far Hawaii's most influential politician and one of the most respected lawmakers in Washington after serving five decades in the Senate, died last week of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He sent Abercrombie a hand-signed letter dated the day he died, saying he would like Hanabusa to succeed him, calling it his "last wish."

"While we are very disappointed that it was not honored, it was the governor's decision to make," Jennifer Sabas, Inouye's chief of staff, said in a statement. "We wish Brian Schatz the best of luck."

Inouye would be "very happy" with the choice, Hawaii Democratic Party chairman Dante Carpenter said. Schatz has less experience than some older politicians in the Senate but he will be building seniority, which is "critical" to the state of Hawaii, he said.

"In the words of Sen. Dan Inouye ? invoked more than once ? seniority in the United States Congress is everything," Carpenter said.

Selecting Hanabusa, 61, would have required a special election in Hawaii's 1st Congressional District. Last time that happened, Hanabusa lost to Republican Charles Djou because of a winner-take-all format that split votes between Democrats.

Abercrombie said the possibility of a special election was a factor, as well as Hanabusa's "key position" on the House Armed Services Committee. The governor said she was on her way toward establishing a senior position on that panel, and it's important for Hawaii ? with its four-member delegation ? to establish seniority in both chambers.

Schatz will serve until an election is held in 2014. He said he will run for re-election to try to keep the Senate seat until 2016 ? the end of Inouye's original term ? and would run again for Senate in 2016 if given the chance.

"I can assure you this: I will give every fiber of my being to doing a good job for the state of Hawaii," Schatz said at a news conference. "We have a long and perhaps difficult road ahead of us, but we can succeed if we work together. I understand the magnitude of this obligation and this honor, and I won't let you down."

Hanabusa congratulated Schatz in a statement.

"Having served as chair of the Hawaii Senate Judiciary Committee when the succession law was passed, I fully respect the process and the governor's right to appoint a successor," she said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had urged Abercrombie to name Inouye's successor before the end of the year. Schatz said he will leave Hawaii for Washington on Wednesday night and be prepared to be sworn in on Thursday. That would make him Hawaii's senior senator heading into the new Congress, which begins Jan. 3.

Sen. Daniel Akaka is retiring at the end of this Congress, after 22 years in the Senate. Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono was elected in November to succeed him.

Schatz, 40, is a former state representative and a former chairman of the state Democratic Party. He also was a leader of President Barack Obama's campaign in Hawaii in 2008.

Even before winning the 2010 general election, Abercrombie expressed faith in Schatz, saying he would put him in charge of attracting more private and federal investment in Hawaii. Other responsibilities included leading the state's clean energy efforts and Asia-Pacific relations.

In making his case before the party's central committee earlier Wednesday, Schatz said that if he was appointed, he would strive to make serving in the Senate his life's work.

First in line to replace Schatz as lieutenant governor is Senate President Shan Tsutsui, who said he planned to discuss the prospect with his family before deciding.

Logitech UE 9000

Logitech's new line of UE headphones includes the powerful, comfortable, and wireless UE 9000. At $399.99 (direct), it's one of the pricier Bluetooth options we've tested, but it doesn't disappoint from a performance standpoint, offering distortion-free audio with deep bass response. It can also be used as a wired pair?a cable is included?and has a built-in remote for controlling iOS devices and handling phone calls. There aren't too many downsides to the UE 9000 other than its price?$400 is significantly more than some of the most comparable competition, like the Beats by Dr. Dre Wireless.

Design
The latest UE designs from Logitech all have a common thread?the color blue that graces the audio cable and the inside of the earcups, and generally futuristic styling, with glossy black-and-metallic color schemes and angular, jagged contours. The UE 9000 features all these things, as well as an exceedingly comfortable circumaural (over-the-ear) fit. Plush earcups are accompanied by a slightly-less plush underside of the headband, but overall the fit is comfortable and ideal for long listening sessions.

There's a Listen Through button on the left earcup?press it to mute music and hear the outside world. The right earcup houses Volume, Playback/Navigation, and Phone controls, as well as the Power Switch, which at least on our model, feels a little poorly designed?loosely fitting in its slide compartment. The Volume controls work independently of the controls on the sound source itself.Logitech UE 9000 inline

Although it is wireless, the UE 9000 can also be used as a wired pair?the 3.5mm cable also connects to the right earcup, along with the USB recharging cable. This would be a big plus even if you had to use the rechargeable headphones in active, powered-up mode in order use the cable, simply because not all sources you can connect cables to will support Bluetooth streaming. But Logitech took the convenience factor one step further here?you can use the UE 9000 as a wired pair with the power off, in passive mode, thus saving battery life. The overall power of the drivers drops off noticeably, but the UE 9000 can get so loud, this is hardly hindrance to enjoying them.

The included detachable cable has an inline microphone and remote for controlling Apple iOS devices and making phone calls. Call clarity is pretty par for the course?you'll be able to hear your call partners and they'll understand you just fine, but since we're dealing with cellular audio fidelity, don't expect to hear a pin drop.

Also included: a USB charging cable that detaches from a wall outlet charger (so you can charge direct from the power adapter or from your computer's USB port), a cleaning shammy cloth, and sturdy zip-up case that the headphones fold down flat into.

The pairing process with a typical mobile device, like the iPhone 4S, is simple and quick, and the headphones use a clever, cool-sounding audio alert, rather than blinking LEDs, to let you know the status of your connection.

Logitech doesn't specify what Bluetooth codecs and versions the UE 9000 supports, but it will work with any iPad, every iPhone since the 3GS, and most iPods that are still made. Battery life will vary with usage, but Logitech estimates a full charge will last roughly 10 hours for wireless listening, 20 hours for powered listening through the audio cable.

Performance
On deep bass tracks at top volumes?on both the source device (in this case, an iPhone 4S) and the headphones, the UE 9000 did not distort. Even at maximum volume, the Knife's "Silent Shout" and Thom Yorke's "Cymbal Rush," both tracks that provide challenging low frequency content in different sub-ranges, were delivered cleanly.

Occasionally, there is some system noise that sneaks into playback, usually between tracks, but at times I heard it during a song?it's a subtle crackling, whirring that can't come close to overpowering the music, and can barely be heard when there is no music playing, but in the interest of being thorough, it's not something I hear with every Bluetooth headphone pair I test.

In passive mode, with the power off, you can still use the UE 9000 with the included cable. The overall output is slightly less intense, but it still includes powerful low frequency response with no distortion, even at top volumes.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," receive a nice bit of low end boost, adding some body and resonance to the lower register strings and deeper percussion hits, but things never get muddy or too bass-heavy. At times, however, the lower strings can sound slightly unnatural?more amplified than acoustic. Though it's not super-accurate, this isn't necessarily an unpleasant phenomenon, and the low-end is nicely balanced by an edgy high-mid presence that lends itself well to the higher register strings, highlighting the rhythmic bowing in this piece. The high frequencies are not ignored, either, though we've definitely encountered pairs that boost the highs more?the woodblock hits on this track are audible, but stand out less than they might on a brighter pair.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," the kick drum loop is delivered with a healthy thump, but there's less emphasis on the treble-heavy attack of the kick than we're used to hearing on this track. Again, things don't ever sound muddy, but the low-end takes center stage over the highs. The high-mids are sufficiently tweaked, however, so that the vocals are delivered clearly over the rumble of the drum loop and bass synth hits.

If you're looking for a solid wireless Bluetooth stereo headphone pair, but $400 is more than you want to spend, the good news is you have a multitude of options?but they won't all be as powerful as the UE 9000. In the big-bass-for-less-money department, the aforementioned Beats by Dr. Dre Wireless has a more exaggerated sound signature and isn't as comfortable, but it costs significantly less. The Sennheiser MM 550-X costs $100 more than the UE 9000 and delivers excellent sound quality, but its ineffective noise cancellation and even higher price give us pause.

For far less, there are still plenty of quality Bluetooth headphone options, like the exercise-friendly Sennheiser MM 100 and the super-affordable Outdoor Technology DJ Slims. There are also solid in-ear wireless choices, like the Denon Globe Cruiser AH-W200. The Logitech UE 9000 is a powerful, comfortable, distortion-free wireless option, but even with its solid performance and wired versatility, the price feels a bit high. Despite this fact, the UE 9000 is unlikely to disappoint.

Lawmakers see 'fiscal cliff' deal as elusive

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With anxiety rising as the country lurches towards a "fiscal cliff," lawmakers are increasingly skeptical about a possible deal and some predict the best possibility would be a small-scale patch because time is running out before the yearend deadline.

Sen. Joe Lieberman predicted Sunday: "We're going to spend New Year's Eve here, I believe."

Even those who see the possibility of a deal don't expect a lot.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said she expects "it is going to be a patch because in four days we can't solve everything."

With the collapse Thursday of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, Lieberman said: "It's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not," meaning that higher taxes for most Americans and painful federal agency budget cuts would be in line to go ahead.

"If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American," said Lieberman, a Connecticut independent.

Wyoming Sen. Jon Barrasso, a member of the GOP leadership, predicted the new year would come without an agreement, and he faulted the White House.

"I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff," he said.

Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, was incredulous at Barrasso's assertion that 'there is only one person that can provide the leadership" on such a matter vital to the nation's interests.

"There are 535 of us that can provide leadership. There are 435 in the House, 100 in the Senate and there is the president, all of us have a responsibility here," he said. "And, you know what is happening? What is happening is the same old tired blame game. He said/she said. I think the American people are tired of it. What they want to hear is 'What is the solution?'"

President Barack Obama and Congress are on a short holiday break. Congress is expected to be back at work Thursday and Obama will be back in the White House after a few days in Hawaii.

"It is time to get back to the table," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say 'go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington.'"

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said he expects something will be passed, but nothing that will solve the nation's growing financial problems.

"I think there's unfortunately only going to be a small deal," he said, but added "it's critical we get to the big deal."

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extends George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

The failure of Boehner's option in the House has shifted the focus.

"The ball is now clearly with the Senate," said Lieberman.

He said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky "have the ability to put this together again and pass something. It won't be a big, grand bargain to take care of the total debt, but they can do some things that will avoid the worst consequences going over the fiscal cliff."

It was only a week ago when news emerged that Obama and Boehner had significantly narrowed their differences. Both were offering a cut in taxes for most Americans, an increase for a relative few and cuts of roughly $1 trillion in spending over a year. Also included was a scaling back of future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients ? a concession on the president's part as much as agreeing to higher tax rates was for the speaker.

Lieberman was on CNN's "State of the Union," while Barrasso, Klobuchar and Conrad appeared on "Fox News Sunday." Hutchison and Warner were on CBS' "Face the Nation."

PITTSBURGH - A.J. Green doesn't really care about the Cincinnati Bengals' woeful past. The wide receiver wasn't part of it and hasn't really taken the time to study it.

The Bengals were bad. End of story.

And now they're good. Beginning of story.

Andy Dalton hit Green for a 21-yard pass in the final minutes to set up Josh Brown's 43-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to lift the Bengals to a 13-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Cincinnati (9-6) clinched a second straight playoff berth after beating the Steelers (7-8) for the first time since 2009. Pittsburgh (7-8) was eliminated from postseason contention.

The only other time the Bengals made the playoffs in consecutive seasons came in 1981-82, six years before Green was born.

"This has been our goal coming in at the beginning of the season," Green said. "A lot of people talked about we hadn't been in in back to back seasons in 30 years. I don't worry about that stuff. I've been here two years and we made the playoffs all two years. That's all we can control."

Shredding the label as erratic - and sometimes comical - losers one improbable victory at a time, the Bengals, their precocious duo of Green and Dalton and their quickly improving defense have Cincinnati in uncharted territory.

The Bengals have been around since 1968. This is the first time they'll make the postseason in two straight non-strike years.

"I know they just think that there's some complex; there's no complex, you've just got to come play and win," coach Marvin Lewis said. "This group in there has very little history of anything."

Maybe that's why Bengals aren't doomed to repeat it.

Brown missed a 56-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter, but earned a second chance when Reggie Nelson picked off Ben Roethlisberger and returned it to the Pittsburgh 46 with 14 seconds remaining. Dalton found Green down the right sideline on the next play, setting up Brown's winner.

"I've had some pretty big kicks, but that was a long time ago," said Brown, who is filling in for injured starter Mike Nugent. "When you have a chance for the playoffs there's nothing bigger. It's a big deal.

Dalton completed 24 of 41 for 278 yards and two interceptions for the Bengals, which snapped a five-game losing streak to Pittsburgh. Green caught 10 passes for 116 yards and Cincinnati's defense next let the Steelers get comfortable.

Roethlisberger completed 14 of 28 passes for 220 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Leon Hall returned the first pick 17 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Nelson stepped in front of an overthrown Roethlisberger pass in the fourth.

The Steelers needed to win their final two games to make the playoffs. Instead, the team that was 6-3 in early November will spend January at home after falling for the fifth time in its last six games.

""We should be (in the playoffs) if it wasn't for me," Roethlisberger said after throwing his second game-deciding interception in eight days.

Roethlisberger tossed a pick - also intended for Wallace - on the second play of overtime in Dallas last Sunday, allowing the Cowboys to win it on a field goal. He openly questioned offensive coordinator Todd Haley's play calling after the loss, but apologized later and insisted he and Haley were "on the same page."

Maybe, but the Steelers hardly played like it. The Bengals sacked Roethlisberger four times and allowed Pittsburgh to complete just 2 of 14 third downs.

"Not our day and thus, not our year," Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. "Just not enough significant plays at the moments. Sounds like a broken record but reality as we sit here."

Pittsburgh did a decent job of keeping Dalton and Green in check, posting season highs with three turnovers and six sacks. The Bengals couldn't run the ball at all, managing just 14 yards against the NFL's top defense. Still, it wasn't enough for the Steelers, turning a season that looked so promising before Election Day into a muddled mess.

Instead of making playoff plans, Pittsburgh needs a victory next week against Cleveland to avoid the first losing season in Tomlin's six-year tenure.

Normally it's the Bengals who are playing out the string. Yet the franchise that served as a punchline for so long is now the one throwing the punches. Cincinnati never trailed in a place it rarely wins and allowed the Steelers to make the critical mistakes.

Well, most of them anyway.

Cincinnati drove into Pittsburgh territory midway through the fourth quarter with the score tied at 10 before things bogged down at the Steelers 38. Rather than try to pin reeling Pittsburgh deep, Lewis sent out Brown to attempt a 56-yard field goal into the tricky Heinz Field winds.

The kick was never close, giving the Steelers premium field position with 3:18 left.

"I make decisions to try to win the game today and they kind of backfired on me a little bit," Lewis said.

Pittsburgh, however, had its own kicking issues. The Steelers moved to the Cincinnati 36, then brought out Shaun Suisham for a 53-yard attempt that was short all the way.

The Bengals went nowhere, giving Pittsburgh one last shot in regulation. Rather than run out the clock and play for overtime with the ball at their own 11 and 44 seconds to go, the Steelers tried to make something happen.

And they did. For the Bengals. Facing second down at the Pittsburgh 29, Roethlisberger rolled to his right and tried to hit Wallace down the sideline. The ball sailed over Wallace's head and into Nelson's arms.

Two plays later Cincinnati was celebrating a playoff berth that signaled another step out of its mediocre past.

NOTES: Cincinnati's 14 yards rushing were the second-fewest in franchise history. The Bengals had 4 yards rushing against Baltimore in 2000 ... Pittsburgh TE Heath Miller left game in the fourth quarter with a right knee injury ... Brown is 8 of 9 since taking over for Nugent three weeks ago ... Five of Pittsburgh's eight losses this season have come by three points ... Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall had 50 yards rushing in his return after serving a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

Understanding cell organization to tackle cancer

Dec. 23, 2012 ? Scientists at The University of Manchester have identified how cells know which way up they need to be. The discovery could help in the fight against cancer because in the early stages of the disease the cells become disorganised.

Professor Charles Streuli and Dr Nasreen Akhtar of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell-Matrix Research have conducted new research that leads to a better understanding of cell polarity. Properly organised tissues are vital to maintaining functional organs and a healthy body. Part of being organised includes cells being in the correct position within the tissue and the right way up, because the top and bottom of cells have different functions.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a layer of protein rich material that surrounds tissues and helps to design and shape all of our organs. Previous studies have demonstrated that the ECM sticks to the cells and guides them into the right position. What hadn't been identified is how the ECM communicates that message.

To understand this better Professor Streuli and Dr Akhtar looked at epithelial cells, which make up the majority of tissues within the body. They studied epithelial cells of the breast, which make milk. These cells also form the linings of mammary ducts to carry milk towards the nipple. It's vital that these cells are organised correctly in order to make milk accessible for the baby. One of the first signs of cancer is that the epithelial cells become disorganised.

Breast epithelial cells connect to the ECM through receptors called integrins. In experiments using mice Professor Streuli and Dr Akhtar removed one of the genes responsible for integrins. They found that without that gene, the cells were both the wrong way round and in the wrong place so the breast tissue became disorganised. They then tried removing integrins in cultured cells from the breast, which produced the same effect of disorder.

Further study revealed that within the cell the integrin receptors connect to the protein ILK. This protein then links to microtubules, a network that forms the transport machinery of the cell. Integrins and microtubules ensure that inside the cell the correct proteins are transported to the top and the bottom of the cell.

The findings have been published in the journal Nature Cell Biology. Commenting on the research Professor Streuli says: "What we identified is a vital interplay between the transport machinery and the integrin receptors which makes sure that proteins are transported to the correct area of the cell. Without this interplay the proteins end up in the wrong place, and this can lead to cells becoming disorganised."

He continues: "What's really interesting is that when we compared breast tissue from our experiments with tissues of patients with early forms of breast cancer, they looked very similar. The cells were upside down and disorganised so they couldn't carry out their functions. We hope that our work to better understand cell polarity could ultimately lead to better diagnosis for cancer patients."

Whilst Professor Streuli and Dr Akhtar only looked at epithelial cells within the breast, they are confident their findings will translate to other organs. The accuracy of their experiments was greatly increased through the use of special 3D cultures to grow the cells, where they form tiny organs that look remarkably similar to real breast tissue.

Dr Akhtar explains: "Growing the breast cells so that they can form 3D structures rather than on hard petri dishes means they develop in a way that is much more akin to how they grow in the body. We were one of the first groups in the UK to be using this technology and we've been really pleased with the results."

Dr Akhtar has been working on this research for five years. She says: "I've been touched by cancer in my own family so I'm really passionate about understanding this devastating disease better. Over 90% of cancers come from epithelial cells, which is why we chose to study them. It's fundamental to understand how healthy cells work properly in order to fully appreciate why they go wrong when cancer develops, and how best to combat the disease."

The next stage of the research will be to investigate the link between altered levels of integrin and cancer, to determine whether this causes the disorganised nature of cells seen in the early stages of the disease.

Adorable New Primate Species Disappearing Via Exotic Pet Shops ...

A new species of slow loris, with the Latin designation Nycticebus kayan, has just been discovered in Borneo. Like many small mammals, it?s just about the most adorable thing you?ve ever seen. It?s also, while not officially evaluated yet, likely to be a threatened species, just like all the related Bornean lorises.

The report just ran in the American Journal of Primatology, under the title ?Taxonomy of the Bornean Slow Loris, with new species Nycticebus kayan (Primates, Lorisidae)?. (I?m sure the primatologists and taxonomists in the audience will be rushing off to grab the latest copy.)

Altough the planet has long been well-mapped in the geographic sense, we are still far from understanding the full shape and form of the living world. The slow lorises are a good example of larger land animals that are nevertheless difficult to study, because they live high in the trees and are active mainly at night. Which is why it?s still possible, even in 2012, to discover a new species.

In fact, while a group of lorises on the island of Borneo was, just a few years ago, under a single species banner, that of the Bornean slow loris (Nycticebus borneanus), scientists now recognize there are four distinct species on the island. Based on previous studies, the three original sub-species of the Bornean loris were elevated by a taxonomic level, while this fourth species is just now being recognized for the first time.

The same difficulties in determining what species are out there also makes it difficult to ascertain conservation status, let alone protect threatened species. Like many small primates, slow lorises are cute and furry, while also looking just exotic enough to attract interest. Illegal trafficking in the exotic pet trade is very high for the Bornean lorises, which makes it a near certainty that members of this undiscovered species have died in people?s homes without their realizing it.

Yes, they do die. For a person in a Western country to try and acquire the necessary foods for a slow loris? diet is next to impossible, and most can?t be bothered. Many of these ill-cared for pets will get along for a little while on whatever they?re given, until they die from the nutrient deficiencies in their diet, lack of medical attention or simple depression (like most primates, these are social animals that don?t do well alone or in captivity).

There?s more. The slow lorises are unique amongst primates (and extremely rare amongst mammals in general), in that they possess a venomous bite. Pet traders usually yank out their canines before selling them, an action which has all the requisite side-effects: horrible pain, infection and sometimes death.

But look at that face! An animal this cute has to be poached, shipped illegally and secretly across the world with little care for its health, so that some privileged idiot can use it as a fashion accessory until it dies. Just rip out all the parts of its body that aren?t convenient for you ? it?s happy simply to have a loving family. Until it dies in pain and alone.

Some developed countries, like Japan, seem to quietly condone the keeping of exotic pets. Japan?s Wildlife Conservation Society has a report with some frightening numbers on the incredible ease with which people, especially women, can acquire a slow loris as a pet. Incredibly, pet shops are able to boldly advertise these animals for sale with few repercussions.

This goes back to a mindset of animals as toys rather than living creatures. I don?t expect to change any exotic pet purchaser?s mind. But I?d like to see some political pressure on the government officials and leaders to crack down on this travesty before these species disappears forever.

At Egypt voting stations, strong views expressed

Ziad Jaber / NBC News

A government official checks voter ID cards outside a polling station near Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday.

By Ziad Jaber, NBC News

CAIRO -- People across Egypt headed to the polls on Saturday for the second and final round of voting on the country?s controversial Islamist-backed constitution. We visited the Jazeera National School in Giza, minutes from downtown Cairo, where dozens of men and women, young and old turned out to cast their ballots.

With armed soldiers guarding the doors, voters lined up at the school?s two polling places, some flashing ?V for Victory? symbols towards our cameras as they stood in line. But while the process appeared to carry on smoothly, the opinions of those we spoke to left little indication if the outcome of today?s referendum will signal an end to the recent political turmoil the country has found itself in.

On Friday, supporters and opponents of President Mohammad Morsi clashed in Alexandria, Egypt?s second largest city, leaving more than 60 people injured.

That didn?t seem to faze Mohammad Abdel Hameed, who voted ?Yes? at the school, accompanied by his young son. ?I can count the number of people who don?t approve of this constitution with one hand,? he said. ?Those in Alexandria, and Tahrir Square. That?s it.? He hoped passing the referendum would lead to economic and scientific prosperity under Morsi?s leadership. ?Everything I?ve read in this constitution, from the first round of voting till now, it?s all great. There?s nothing bad for any Muslims, Christians or Jews. I wish people would take the opportunity to understand this constitution.?

Ziad Jaber / NBC News

Ahmad Hussein echoed his sentiment. ?For the first time in Egypt?s history, the constitution explicitly calls for the freedom of religion for Christians and Jews. The Islamist constitution provides those protections,? he said. Hussein argued that opponents of Morsi and the document were simply looking to destabilize the nation. ?[The opposition] wants to sabotage the current of political Islam by any means. They want to disrupt the country politically and economically, in addition to its security,? he said. ?Dr. Morsi told them to join the discussion about the points they find controversial to solve this issue and they said ?No!?. What?s wrong with this constitution? Even if there are some sticking points, let?s resolve them.?

Inside the school?s second polling place, dozens of women -- many donned in traditional hijab and niqab -- packed the polling booths, checking ?Yes? or ?No? in circles on the ballot. As they emerged one by one into the school yard, many seemed pleased to show off their purple finger prints, markers now ubiquitous with voting in the region.

Nuha Yemeni, a psychologist, and her mother Um Aziza showed off their ink outside the school. ?We all voted 'No', we?re with Team 'No',? Yemeni said, laughing as she explained her reservations about the constitution. ?Even if it passes, we hope there can be amendments within the parliament,? she said. ?I want Egypt to be a calm country, a real democracy. In this moment, I can?t realize the future?with the Ikhwan [Arabic for Muslim Brotherhood], I don?t know what will happen tomorrow.?

That's also why Aziza voted no. ?This is our country?our country is gone,? added Aziza. ?God protect it. We?re lost.??

Ziad Jaber / NBC News

Um Aziza, far right, and her daughter Nuha Yemeni, center, show that they voted Saturday.
