Vegetarianism can reduce risk of heart disease by up to a third

Jan. 30, 2013 ? The risk of hospitalisation or death from heart disease is 32% lower in vegetarians than people who eat meat and fish, according to a new study from the University of Oxford.

Heart disease is the single largest cause of death in developed countries, and is responsible for 65,000 deaths each year in the UK alone. The new findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that a vegetarian diet could significantly reduce people's risk of heart disease.

'Most of the difference in risk is probably caused by effects on cholesterol and blood pressure, and shows the important role of diet in the prevention of heart disease,' explains Dr Francesca Crowe, lead author of the study at the Cancer Epidemiology Unit, University of Oxford.

This is the largest study ever conducted in the UK comparing rates of heart disease between vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

The analysis looked at almost 45,000 volunteers from England and Scotland enrolled in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Oxford study, of whom 34% were vegetarian. Such a significant representation of vegetarians is rare in studies of this type, and allowed researchers to make more precise estimates of the relative risks between the two groups.

The EPIC-Oxford cohort study was funded by Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council and carried out by the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford.

Professor Tim Key, co-author of the study and deputy director of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit, University of Oxford, said: 'The results clearly show that the risk of heart disease in vegetarians is about a third lower than in comparable non-vegetarians.'

The Oxford researchers arrived at the figure of 32% risk reduction after accounting for factors such as age, smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, educational level and socioeconomic background.

Participants were recruited to the study throughout the 1990s, and completed questionnaires regarding their health and lifestyle when they joined. These included detailed questions on diet and exercise as well as other factors affecting health such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Almost 20,000 participants also had their blood pressures recorded, and gave blood samples for cholesterol testing.

The volunteers were tracked until 2009, during which time researchers identified 1235 cases of heart disease. This comprised 169 deaths and 1066 hospital diagnoses, identified through linkage with hospital records and death certificates. Heart disease cases were validated using data from the Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project (MINAP).

The researchers found that vegetarians had lower blood pressures and cholesterol levels than non-vegetarians, which is thought to be the main reason behind their reduced risk of heart disease.

Vegetarians typically had lower body mass indices (BMI) and fewer cases of diabetes as a result of their diets, although these were not found to significantly affect the results. If the results are adjusted to exclude the effects of BMI, vegetarians remain 28% less likely to develop heart disease.

The findings reinforce the idea that diet is central to prevention of heart disease, and build on previous work looking at the influence of vegetarian diets, the researchers say.

Clinton doesn't see 'getting back into politics'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday cast doubt on speculation she might run for the White House in 2016.

In an interview taped for National Public Radio, Clinton was asked what questions she needs to answer for herself as she decides whether to run for president.

"I'm not even posing those questions. I am really looking forward to stepping off the fast track that I've been on. I've been out of politics as Secretary of State. I don't see myself getting back into politics," she said, according to an excerpt of the interview.

Whether this is her last word on the subject is unknown. She will face strong pressure from Democrats to join the field of contenders. Clinton will step down this week, following Senate confirmation Tuesday of Massachusetts Democratic Senator John Kerry as her successor.

Those close to Clinton are eager for her to announce a 2016 run, so much so that a group has already formed a new super PAC and registered with the Federal Election Commission on Friday, called "Ready for Hillary."

In 2008, she lost to President Barack Obama in a bitter Democratic primary campaign to be the party nominee for the White House.

Although Clinton, 65, did not categorically rule out another presidential run, in a separate NBC interview she said that she was healthy enough to wage a campaign.

"I have no doubt that I am healthy enough and my stamina is great enough and I'll be fully recovered to do whatever I choose to do," Clinton told "Andrea Mitchell Reports" in an interview that aired on Tuesday.

Clinton was hospitalized in December after doctors found a blood clot stemming from a concussion she suffered previously.

She intends to do more public speaking and writing, and work alongside her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and daughter Chelsea on "mutual foundation interests," she said in the NPR interview.

"I want to be involved in philanthropy, advocacy, working on issues - like women and girls - that I care deeply about," Clinton said.

Study says leafy greens top food poisoning source

NEW YORK (AP) ? A big government study has fingered leafy greens like lettuce and spinach as the leading source of food poisoning, a perhaps uncomfortable conclusion for health officials who want us to eat our vegetables.

"Most meals are safe," said Dr. Patricia Griffin, a government researcher and one of the study's authors who said the finding shouldn't discourage people from eating produce. Experts repeated often-heard advice: Be sure to wash those foods or cook them thoroughly.

While more people may have gotten sick from plants, more died from contaminated poultry, the study also found. The results were released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans ? or 48 million people? gets sick from food poisoning. That includes 128,000 hospitalization and 3,000 deaths, according to previous CDC estimates.

The new report is the most comprehensive CDC has produced on the sources of food poisoning, covering the years 1998 through 2008. It reflects the agency's growing sophistication at monitoring illnesses and finding their source.

What jumped out at the researchers was the role fruits and vegetables played in food poisonings, said Griffin, who heads the CDC office that handles foodborne infection surveillance and analysis.

About 1 in 5 illnesses were linked to leafy green vegetables ? more than any other type of food. And nearly half of all food poisonings were attributed to produce in general, when illnesses from other fruits and vegetables were added in.

It's been kind of a tough month for vegetables. A controversy erupted when Taco Bell started airing a TV ad for its variety 12-pack of tacos, with a voiceover saying that bringing a vegetable tray to a football party is "like punting on fourth-and-1." It said that people secretly hate guests who bring vegetables to parties.

The fast-food chain on Monday announced it was pulling the commercial after receiving complaints that it discouraged people from eating vegetables.

Without actually saying so, the CDC report suggests that the Food and Drug Administration should devote more staff time and other resources to inspection of fruits and vegetables, said Michael Doyle, director of the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety.

Earlier this month, the FDA released a proposed new rule for produce safety that would set new hygiene standards for farm workers and for trying to reduce contact with animal waste and dirty water.

Meanwhile, CDC officials emphasized that their report should not be seen as discouraging people from eating vegetables.

Many of the vegetable-related illnesses come from norovirus, which is often spread by cooks and food handlers. So contamination sometimes has more to do with the kitchen or restaurant it came from then the food itself, Griffin noted.

Also, while vegetable-related illnesses were more common, they were not the most dangerous. The largest proportion of foodborne illness deaths ? about 1 in 5 ? were due to poultry. That was partly because three big outbreaks more than 10 years ago linked to turkey deli meat.

But it was close. CDC estimated 277 poultry-related deaths in 1998-2008, compared to 236 vegetable-related deaths.

Fruits and nuts were credited with 96 additional deaths, making 334 total deaths for produce of all types. The CDC estimated 417 deaths from all kinds of meat and poultry, another 140 from dairy and 71 from eggs.

Red meat was once seen as one of the leading sources of food poisoning, partly because of a deadly outbreak of E. coli associated with hamburger. But Griffin and Doyle said there have been significant safety improvements in beef handling. In the study, beef was the source of fewer than 4 percent of food-related deaths and fewer than 7 percent of illnesses.

New technique sheds light on RNA

Jan. 28, 2013 ? When researchers sequence the RNA of cancer cells, they can compare it to normal cells and see where there is more RNA. That can help lead them to the gene or protein that might be triggering the cancer.

But other than spotting a few known instigators, what does it mean? Is there more RNA because it's synthesizing too quickly or because it's not degrading fast enough? What part of the biological equilibrium is off?

After more than a decade of work, researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have developed a technique to help answer those questions.

The method involves a compound called bromouridine, which can be used to tag or label newly created RNA. Researchers apply the bromouridine for 30 minutes then isolate the RNA to see where the new RNA was made. They call this process Bru-Seq.

On the other hand, the researchers can follow up the bromouridine labeling with a rinse with the chemical uridine for different periods of time. They call this BruChase-Seq because the uridine chases away the newly made RNA so they can look at how the RNA ages over the course of one hour, two hours or six hours. In other words, is the RNA degrading like it's supposed to?

"We can see the whole pattern of all the RNA that's synthesized and all the RNA that's stable vs. degrading. We can sort it out in terms of synthesis and stability and see if a particular RNA is more stable in the cancer cell than the normal cell or if it is taking longer to degrade in the cancer cell than in the normal cell," says study author Mats Ljungman, Ph.D., associate professor of radiation oncology at the U-M Medical School.

"With our technique, we're adding 10-fold more depth to the picture of how genes are expressed," he adds.

Ljungman is part of the Cancer Center's new Translational Oncology Program, which brings together cancer researchers from across the University of Michigan to speed the translation of basic science into clinical trials and new treatment opportunities for patients.

The Cancer Center is currently using gene sequencing techniques to help match advanced cancer patients with potential clinical trial opportunities based on the make-up of their tumor.

In addition to helping with cancer sequencing, Ljungman sees potential for this new technique to help with identifying diseases such as diabetes or inflammation. In the paper describing the technique, published online in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers describe how they used it to understand an inflammatory response in cells. The researchers have also used the technique to test blood samples.

With a great deal more investigation, Ljungman envisions that one day the test could potentially be offered to people visiting their doctor as a way to monitor changes in the RNA.

"If something is significantly changed from one test to the next, it could be a red flag or an early warning sign of disease. That would be the broadest use of this technology," Ljungman says.

If employee loses workers - Business Management Daily

Congratulations! You just won a workers? compensation case because you had strong evidence that the employee?s injury wasn?t caused by anything that happened at work. Now get ready for round No. 2.

If the employee appeals, be sure to ask for attorneys? fees. Under the right circumstances, you?ll be entitled to payment.

Recent case: Christopher developed acute myelogenous leukemia when he was 33 and sued his most recent employer for workers? compensation benefits. He alleged that his illness was caused by workplace exposure to benzene, a chemical that can sometimes trigger cancer like his.

But the employer presented compelling evidence that none of the processes Christopher worked on involved benzene, and that any ex?posure at work would at most have been 1/2000th of the limit OSHA considers safe. Plus, the evidence suggested that the type of cancer Christopher developed was based more on genetics and cigarette exposure than benzene.

Christopher?s case was dismissed, but he appealed, arguing that his ?expert witness? presented evidence from science journals published in the 1950s showing a connection between benzene and cancer.

The employer asked for attorneys? fees if he lost the appeal.

The court refused to overturn the decision and ordered the North Caro??lina Industrial Commission to determine whether Christopher should pay the employer?s legal fees for a frivolous appeal. (Scearce v. Chemtek, No. COA12-345, Court of Appeals of North Carolina, 2012)

(AP) ? A measure of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes fell last month after reaching a 2 ?-year high in November. Sales were held back by a limited supply of available homes.

The National Association of Realtors said Monday that its seasonally adjusted index for pending home sales dropped 4.3 percent in December from November to 101.7. That's still 6.9 percent higher than a year ago.

The decline signals that sales of previously occupied homes may cool off in the coming months. There's generally a one- to two-month lag between a signed contract and a completed sale.

Still, the broader trend in home sales remains solid. Completed sales of previously occupied homes rose last year to their highest level in five years, one of many signs of recovery in the housing market last year. And the Realtors' group forecasts that sales will rise 9 percent this year, as the recovery strengthens. Other economists have similar forecasts.

"We believe the disappointment represents just a brief lull in what are volatile data rather than a fundamental change of direction," said Jim O'Sullivan, an economist at High Frequency Economics.

Stable job gains and record-low mortgage rates have encouraged more people to buy homes. And a tight supply of homes for sale has pushed up prices and made builders more confident to step up construction.

Completed sales of previously occupied homes dipped in December from November, primarily because the number homes available for sale fell to an 11-year low. And stable price gains could draw more sellers in the spring, when the traditional home-buying season begins.

More people are also moving out on their own after living with friends and relatives in the recession. That's driving a big gain in apartment construction and also pushing up rents.

Builders, meanwhile, started work on the most new homes in 4 ? years in December. Last year was the best year for residential construction 2008, just after the recession started.

In December, the index of contracts signed fell in the Northeast, South and West. But it ticked up in the Midwest. The supply of homes costing less than $100,000 was particularly tight in the West, the Realtors said.

For purposes of their research, the scientists irradiated two separate layered systems with ultrashort laser pulses on the order of just one hundred femtoseconds (10-15 s). One sample consisted essentially of a single thin layer of ferromagnetic nickel. By contrast, a second sample of this same nickel material was coated with a non-magnetic layer of gold. Only a mere 30 nanometers (10-9 m) thick, the gold layer swallowed up the lion's share of the laser light so that barely any light ended up reaching the nickel layer. In spite of this, the nickel layer's magnetization rapidly dissipated shortly after the laser pulse entered each sample. However, in the case of the gold-coated sample, the researchers recorded a split-second delay. The observations were based on measurements obtained using circularly polarized femtosecond x-ray pulses at BESSY II, Berlin's own electron storage ring, with the help of the femtoslicing beamline.

"This allowed us to demonstrate experimentally that during this process, it isn't the light itself that is responsible for the ultrafast demagnetization but rather hot electrons, which are generated by the laser pulse," explains Andrea Eschenlohr. Excited electrons are able to rapidly move across short distances - like the ultra-thin gold layer. In the process, they also deliver their magnetic moment (their "spin") to the ferromagnetic nickel layer, prompting the breakdown of the latter's magnetic order. "Actually, what we had hoped to see is how we might be able to influence the spin using the laser pulse," explains Dr. Christian Stamm, who heads the experiment. "The fact that we ended up being able to directly observe how these spins migrate was a complete surprise to everyone."

Laser pulses are thus one possibility to generate "spin currents" where the spin is transferred in place of an electric charge. This observation is relevant for spintronics research where scientists design new devices from magnetic layered systems, which perform calculations based on spins rather than electrons, enabling them to very quickly process and store information while at the same time saving energy.

Dr. Eschenlohr concluded her doctoral work at HZB, in the context of which she generated the results described above, in late 2012. As of January of this year, Dr. Eschenlohr is a scientific associate at University of Duisburg-Essen.

China keeps mum on Bo trial despite talk it could start on Monday

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's government is giving no details on the trial of shamed senior leader Bo Xilai, the final chapter in its worst political scandal in decades, as speculation mounted the case could be heard as early as Monday.

A Beijing-backed Hong Kong newspaper, the Ta Kung Pao, reported on Friday that Bo's trial would begin on Monday in the southern Chinese city of Guiyang.

But the government has not confirmed or denied this, belying recent efforts to promote transparency and openness, and at least two well-informed sources said on Sunday the reports were not true.

However, a third source, who has ties to the leadership, said the trial would in fact begin on Monday in Guiyang.

It was not immediately possible to reconcile the conflicting reports. Reuters reporters in Guiyang said they could see no signs of heightened security so far, either around the main courthouse or in any other part of the city.

Once a contender for China's top leadership, Bo was ousted from his post as Communist Party chief in the southwestern city of Chongqing last year following his wife's murder of a British businessman, Neil Heywood.

Bo, 63, was widely tipped to be promoted to the party's elite inner core before his career unraveled. The downfall came after his former police chief, Wang Lijun, fled briefly to a U.S. consulate for last February and alleged that Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, had murdered Heywood with poison.

Gu and Wang have both since been convicted and jailed.

No criminal charges against Bo have yet been revealed, only accusations from the party of corruption and of bending the law to hush up Heywood's killing.

Bo was last seen in public in March and is being held in custody, though there has been no word where he is being held and he has not been allowed to defend himself in public.

China's new Communist Party chief Xi Jinping, who takes over from Hu Jintao as president in March, has made government accountability and fighting corruption two of his key themes since assuming his party role in November.

The party has also tried to show it is at least paying lip service to following legal procedures in pursuing the case against Bo.

"If they are doing this by the book and the trial is on Monday then there should have been a formal announcement by now," said Zhang Lifan, a Beijing-based political commentator.

"If they don't follow procedure, and hold the trial in great secrecy in a very low-key manner, it would be going against the convention (of the previous trials) and make people suspicious of the whole process and of government promises," he added.

The trial, when it does comes, is almost certain to be conducted behind closed doors, with access limited to close family members, a handful of state media and a carefully selected group of other observers.

In Gu's trial, British diplomats were allowed in, but only because she was accused of killing a British national.

After Gu and Wang's trials, court officials briefed the media, foreign press included.

Formal charges against both Gu and Wang were also announced ahead of their trials.

A source with direct knowledge of Bo's case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Sunday that reports on the trial date were likely false and that the case was unlikely to begin on Monday.

Another source, who is close to Bo's family, also said such reports were incorrect.

Further adding to the confusion, several Chinese news websites on Sunday carried the entire Ta Kung Pao article about Bo's trial, but without attributing it to the Hong Kong newspaper or adding any other details.

Love in D/s relationships ? On A Magic Carpet Ride

In searching for a topic tonight, I was deeply drawing across a blank what to write about. Although some people have helpfully offered suggestions and some made it into my pile of ?things to write about?. Not because I do not want to write about the topic tonight, but by and large because the last few days sleep has not been forthcoming with me, due to various circumstances. I guess it?s life and hopefully I?ll catch up on sleep soon.

While storing away one of these ideas, my eye scanned over the list of topics I had stored away and suddenly came across one that may be worth writing about tonight. And then I remembered: a couple of weeks ago, I came across it, while pursuing a list of ideas from the submissive prompt website. Occasionally they have sayings, or a paragraph of writing that seem to expand on a certain idea, and while they don?t propose a question to go with it, I believe the idea is to actually write your thoughts about it.

The paragraph said the following:

You have the right to be loved and to love. Anyone who tells you that love does not fit? into a D/s relationship has never experienced the fulfilment of all it truly can be. Submissives are by nature loving and needing of love and have every right to expect this to be a part of their lives. It takes love to bring your submission into full bloom, so don?t settle for less.

A beautiful saying and one I truly and deeply agree with. So with that in mind, let us try and look at this topic from different sides:

Expanding on this topic is for me somewhat more difficult than I thought it would be, for if nothing else, the idea named in this statement are so part of my core values that it would be trying to describe the colour red to someone who has been blind? all their life, still I am going to give it a try.

For me as a submissive, love means so many things. Not just the love I receive, but the love I give as well. I think to begin with every human being has the right to be loved and to love. I think that should be a universal right. Strangely enough, in doing some research for this blog; the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights does not even mention this. Of course you could argue that since the declaration of human rights is supposedly to be a more legal document, something emotional such as love, does not feature in it. However it does give us the right to believe what we want, so why not love? Why should we not be allowed to love those that we want and let those who want to love us do so without abandon.

The interesting part comes into the next two lines. Despite that day in day out and especially on Second Life, submissives are getting the belief drilled into them that a D/s relationship is perfectly possible if not preferable without any kind of love at all[1]. It beggars believe beyond anything. Why people use this line, is frankly far and completely beyond me and frankly I have never cared enough to ask as mostly I am just shaking my head.

I can only guess at what their justification may be. Perhaps they think that in such a way, not giving love, but remaining a cold social detachment towards the submissive an aura of strictness, and control can be fostered, making the submissive, who in their desire for control, strictness and being loved stretch themselves to accommodate every request of the dominant in hope to find that little spark inside them. But I am only guessing.

Sure I have played with people who were cold and distant to an extend and while at some point in time that can be an interesting experience, it is not something how I would to like to fill my relationship. Perhaps it is interesting to mention that while these people may have come across in play to be cold, uncaring and distant, I knew that the reality of it was that it was just a role they put on. I can not remember that I ever played with someone that truly did not not care or showed signs of caring.

But then again, as I have often mentioned before. For me there is a large difference between the play, which I tend to bring under the S&M label, or even B&D if you want and the D/s, which I always have seen as the mental component of BDSM and especially in relevance to how relationship dynamics are.

So, in my original plan for this blog-post, I was going to write about the other side of things in an attempt to give a balanced overview from all sides. In this case it would be the darker side, the D/s relationship without love but during writing I came to the conclusion that I don?t believe that can happen. Or rather with the caveat, I believe that this can not exist for me. I was reminded to a conversation I had with a dominant a long time ago, who?s sole take on the relationship was to humiliate and embarrass the submissive and basically make her life as miserable as possible with the goal that he would own a submissive that would live in perpetual misery. While the concept of it, was perhaps somewhat interesting (mostly from the point of view that it was something that was very opposing from my own view), it was not something that I could see as either feasible or something I would be willing to undergo and live with.

After all, with Maslov?s Hierarchy of Need in mind, being loved is a very important layer as well as safety (think emotional safety here) and self esteem. So willingly undergoing something that would be aimed at breaking that is something that only can be classified as grossly unhealthy.

I have a quote in my profile, that is very apt for this blog-post. The quote comments on the nature of the relationship and is as follows:

?D/s is not about pain or how much pain one can stand ? it is about how much love can be shown.[2]?

The above quote shows clearly my thoughts about how D/s without love for me, is not something that is possible. To have a relationship with someone is caring about them in such a way that love seems to be a natural part of it. If someone claims not love you, or not willing to love you; then why would you want to give them control over your life, your well being and your body?

Like the paragraph describes; as a submissive we are by nature (or nurture, but that is a whole different debate) loving, giving an caring. But we are also very much in need of being loved, looked after and cared for. Even though this is not always in a way that ?normal? or rather vanilla people would recognise or are comfortable with. To give a good example; being tied up and gagged makes me feel very secure, cared for and looked after (see my previous blog on the notion of freedom in bondage), not something perhaps some people would agree with. Just the same as being put in my place, being told when I go to far. For me it is the stuff that definitely warms the cockles of my heart.

And that brings me to the last part, love in a D/s relationship, as a ?tool? to make your submission blossom. I think by and large that is a bit of a misnomer on my part. While I do understand the sentiment. I think that the blossoming of submission, the growing of it, is something that goes hand in hand with love, not as much as a tool that can be used. I think it?s a circle of trust, love, submission, sharing and communicating, all wrapped
While talking over this with some of my friends in Second Life, one of them mentioned that a submissive that loves you, will be more loyal, be more submissive, will try harder, than one that does it just because you are holding her leash[3].

And I could not agree more. The ends I am willing to go for my Mistress are definitely much deeper compared to when I would play with others. And that is in part of course due to the love, due to the longevity of our relationship, to the trust she has earned from me.

So with all that, yes, love in a D/s relationship is extremely important and without it, I can not see how one could have a growing and healthy relationship, D/s or really otherwise.

Have fun and with love,
lexi

Is a Computer & Internet Franchise Opportunity for You? ? Business ...

bcom-sy-07o-corporate-law2.jpg

Before you ask yourself this question, you should ask yourself whether any franchise opportunity would be right for you. Are you the sort of entrepreneur who would succeed in a franchise setting? There are many reasons you might say ?yes? to this and many reasons to explore franchise opportunities, but here are the top ten according to about.com:

1. Franchising significantly decreases the amount of time it will take your business to turn a profit.

2. Franchise opportunities have a much lower failure rate than new, independent businesses.

3. Starting a franchise business does not require nearly as much time and effort as starting an independent business. This affords franchisees more time to spend with their families and more time to do the things they enjoy.

4. Franchising is federally regulated. There is a great deal of information that franchisors are required to provide to potential franchisees, so they can make an informed investment decision.

5. Franchise opportunities provide fast, easy access to financing. Some of the larger franchises even provide in-house financing.

6. Franchise opportunities include amazing training and support from the franchisor to ensure franchisees? success.

7. There is tremendous potential for growth and expansion within the franchise system.

8. The wealth of franchise opportunities means there are many available investment levels. Some franchises only require initial investments of a few thousand dollars. This includes many franchises that offer an Internet-based business or home-based business plan.

9. The resources available to the franchisor translate into professional development opportunities for the franchisees.

10. Added benefits?such as investment incentives and a royalty-free period?are often available through a start-up franchise. Although slightly riskier than buying into an established franchise, new franchise opportunities offer franchisees the chance to help grow the business with their own creativity and innovation.

I Am Interested in Franchise Opportunities, Now What?

Now, you can ask yourself that first question again: Is a computer franchise or Internet franchise for me?

If you are interested in an Internet-based business or home-based business, the answer to this question is probably, ?yes.?

A home-based business offers many unique advantages. For one thing, working from home through an Internet franchise will provide you with an average of 348 hours of extra time. This is the amount of time the average American spends commuting to and from work each year. That?s a lot of time you could spend growing your business, interacting with your family or engaging in your favorite leisure activities.

An Internet-based business that you operate from home lets you establish your own earning potential. Simply put: the harder you work, the more money you will make.

An Internet franchise requires a much smaller initial investment than a traditional franchise, and this equates to a smaller risk.

There are numerous tax advantages associated with a home-based business. For example, a percentage of your mortgage and many other household maintenance expenses can be deducted as business expenses.

Autonomy is a major selling point for starting your own Internet-based business. Of course, an Internet franchise will have guidelines for its franchisees, but essentially you?re your own boss. And since you?ll be running your business from home, feel free to show up for work in your pajamas.

Franchise Opportunities

There are so many great options available to entrepreneurs interested in an Internet franchise or other home-based business: The Advertising Consultants franchise allows you to start a home-based advertising business with an initial investment of just $25,000. American Billing Systems? initial investment is under $15,000, but it still provides franchisees the opportunity to earn six-figure incomes operating a home-based business.

WSI is an Internet franchise that has been ranked first in its category by Entrepreneur Magazine for the past six years. They also rank 36th on Entrepreneur?s Top 500 Franchises list, ahead of well-known companies like Hilton Hotels, Snap-On Tools, Ben & Jerry?s and Gold?s Gym.

WSI has 1500+ franchisees worldwide who provide Internet consulting services for small and medium businesses using their patent-pending Lifecycle System. WSI specializes in creating exciting websites on a small-business owner?s budget. WSI franchisees evaluate the needs of their clients and provide them with Internet marketing tools to decrease costs and maximize profitability.

They are able to provide great quality work at lower costs because they pool resources and distribute costs across their network of Internet consultants. Since low-cost, great service is almost a guarantee of repeat business, WSI franchisees are able to create an ongoing source of income by forging successful client relationships.

WSI?or any Internet-based business like it?would be a great fit for any entrepreneur who is skilled at business-to-business networking and developing promotional strategies. Clients who purchase the services of this type of Internet-based business will be business owners themselves, so professionalism and expertise are essential. An entrepreneur who is enthusiastic about Internet marketing and has the spirit of a true capitalist will do quite well with an Internet, home-based business.

Woman sues Match.com for $10 million after brutal attack

4 hrs.

A Las Vegas woman who was severely beaten by a man she met through Match.com is suing the online dating site for $10 million?two years and multiple surgeries after the attack that left her hospitalized for months.

The woman, Mary Kay Beckman, was stabbed multiple times with a butcher knife on Jan. 21, 2011?by?Wade Mitchell Ridley, and when?the knife broke, he stomped on her head. Ridley, who was sentenced to?28 to 70 years,?died in prison last year. He was also facing a murder charge in Arizona for the stabbing death of a former girlfriend a few weeks after the attack on Beckman.

Beckman filed suit in Clark County, Nevada,?accusing Match.com of negligence, negligent misrepresentation, deceptive trade, failure to warn and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

The site, she said, failed to warn her about the dangers of meeting "an individual whose intentions are not to find a mate, but to find victims to kill or rape."

The real estate agent said she joined Match.com about a month before her first in-person meeting with Ridley on Sept. 26, 2010. They dated for 10 days, but she called it off. That's when Ridley started sending her threatening and harassing messages.?

On Jan. 21, 2011, Ridley attacked Beckman in her garage, and left her for dead, she says, when she stopped making a "gurgling noise."?

Beckman, now 50, continues to recover and to speak out against online dating?"I do not believe that online dating is a safe venue for men or women,"?she?recently?told?a?local?FOX?TV?reporter.

Match.com, in a statement to NBC News Friday, said that what happened to Beckman "is horrible, but this lawsuit is absurd.?The many millions of people who have found love on Match.com and other online dating sites know how fulfilling it is. And while that doesn't make what happened in this case any less awful, this is about a sick, twisted individual with no prior criminal record, not an entire community of men and women looking to meet each other."

Safety, the site said, "is very important to Match," which, like many other online dating sites, includes online and offline tips for staying safe.

In California, Match.com and two other dating sites, eHarmony and Spark Networks, signed a joint statement of business principles, agreeing to screen for sex offenders and take other safety steps after a woman was assaulted on a date, the state attorney general's office said last March.?

The joint statement ?was prompted by the 2010 sexual assault of a Los Angeles-area woman by a man she met through Match.com, a spokeswoman for the state attorney general's office said. The woman sued Match.com, seeking a court order requiring the site to check applicants' backgrounds to weed out convicted sex offenders. She dropped the suit after the site provided proof of such screening.

Meanwhile, in the last two years, friends and work associates of Beckman have held fundraisers for her, including one last year, with information shared about it on YouTube (see video below).

Hundreds updated, now lets you play your own music

Hundreds, the insanely addictive iPhone and iPad puzzle game by Semi Secret Software, has been updated to allow you to play your own music in the background. That's right, you now get to pick your own soundtrack. They've also added volume sliders for both music and sound effects, so unlike movies and commercials, you can control the relative values of what you hear.

Unfortunately, an iCloud bug slipped in that's causing some stability issues for some users. Semi Secret Software has submitted a fix, and are hoping it will be approved soon.

Note: Developer Adam "Atomic" Saltsman was good enough to sit down and talk Hundreds, Canabalt, and game design with us on Debug. Give it a listen.

International Political Economy Zone: Antigua & Online Gaming ...

The United States likes to throw its weight around the international political economy; that much is obvious. Given the sheer girth of its residents, this is not something to be easily ignored. However, like all bullies, the United States can be put in its place if you stand up and fight for a principle. Don't relent: bloody them up, and they'll soon be crying home to the land of apple pie and Guantanamo Ghraib. The North Vietnamese famously sent the Yanks home for supporting the exceedingly corrupt South Vietnamese leadership. Why should it have taken 58,220 dead Americans to figure out that this was primarily a conflict for Vietnamese independence as opposed to another chip to fall in "domino theory"? A regrettable fact remains that an inordinate number of African-Americans died due to the white man's delusion--as Muhammad Ali said, "No Viet Cong ever called me nig**r." Thankfully, a majority of more pragmatic Americans are not ideologues; they are more interested in commerce. By 1995 despite all that history, the Yanks normalized relations with the folks who had justifiably run them out of where they did not belong since--surprise!--Vietnam was becoming economically dynamic due its policy of doi moi of opening up to the rest of the world.

This long-winded introduction brings me to another instance of global injustice being perpetuated by the Americans. The long-running case (DS 285) of the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda (Antigua) against the United States over online gambling services was well underway before I started blogging in 2007 [1, 2]. In broad strokes, the United States implemented restrictions that hindered offshore gambling services from plying their trade Stateside. In 2003, Antigua took the United States to the World Trade Organization dispute settlement mechanism (DSM) over these restrictions and won its case. However, instead of complying with the WTO ruling, the US appealed and lost in 2005. Worse still, in 2006 its lawmakers passed the "Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act" (UIGEA) which prohibited offshore gambling services from the US altogether. Antigua once again sued the US at the WTO for non-compliance and won in 2007. However, in the almost six years since then, the United States has failed to meet its WTO commitments to allow online gambling.

What remedies can Antigua resort to? Since 2007, it has effectively had the right to inflict cross-retaliation on the United States over its non-compliance. That is, it obviously cannot retaliate in the same industry since the US does not offer gambling services to Antigua--least of all in an amount equivalent equal to the economic damages caused by the United States' non-compliance with international trade law. (The WTO authorized $21 million annually.) It is generally believed that the US arrived at side deals not made public to prevent Antigua from hitting the US where it hurts most: seeking redress by trespassing on America's beloved intellectual property. (Joe Falchetti has a good summary of the still-ongoing UIGEA saga.) Some things have changed in the US legal sphere, but UIGEA remains active in prohibiting offshore gambling firms alike those headquartered in the Antigua from operating Stateside.

However, I suppose you can only take so much US bullying: Reuters now reports that Antigua is going to notify the WTO that it will cross-retaliate by flouting US copyrights:

The tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda will tell the World Trade Organization on Monday that it intends to use trade sanctions against the United States, which it could enforce by allowing movie downloads without protecting U.S. copyright...Antigua won the right to hit back with trade sanctions and - with little hope of persuading Washington by threatening to block U.S. imports to the nation of 70,000 - it was given permission to use intellectual property instead.?

"American intellectual property rights holders are fighting piracy across the globe. They hate the theft of their intellectual property rights and they spend enormous sums trying to prevent it," Mark Mendel, a lawyer representing Antigua in the case, told Reuters. He declined to say exactly how Antigua might act, but said it could include copyrights, patents or trademarks.

The possibilities are endless for justifiably kicking the Yanks in the balls...of commerce; think for instance of a "WTO legal" torrent site. I relish the thought of...wait for it..."Antiguanoid":

A website that allowed users to download U.S. software or movies without paying anything to the copyright holders was one possibility, as was selling Manchester United T-shirts - the soccer club is owned by the American Glazer family. "If, when, how it's going to happen, people will just have to wait to find out." Although the WTO awarded Antigua the right to impose only $21 million in annual sanctions, Mendel said the size of the award was not an obstacle.

If Antigua were to begin a state-sponsored website to download Hollywood movies and U.S.-made computer software, it could still inflict a lot of damage on U.S. rights holders. "When you think about it, $21 million could be all accomplished in one go or in 50 million goes. The dollar figure is not important," he said. Asked if a site charging one cent per download would be a way to accomplish Antigua's aims, he said: "That is an intellectual possibility..."?

Could there even be a "domino theory" of more poor countries getting back at the big, bad US of A this way? Antigua's lawyer (American) Mark Mendel thinks so:

The United States should be worried about other WTO members following Antigua and using the same tactic to get their way in trade disputes, Mendel said. "If they aren't worried enough about Antigua they should be worried about someone else coming along. If we do something inventive that could pose a lot of problems for intellectual property holders, if we create that precedent, the consequences could be enormous," he said.

"With Antigua, it's $21 million. Maybe with China it's going to be $21 billion," said Mendel. "One of the messages we want to get across is that the WTO was sold to smaller countries as a level playing field and a way for them to expand the reach of commerce, subject to a set of rules that apply to everybody. I think more than anything else this case is about fairness. The WTO is supposed to be fair."
Whether in geopolitics or trade, Americans like to abuse their power and tell you it's fair. I think it's high time the rest of the world stood up to this bullying and roughed up Mickey Mouse and his buddies real good. Even while blatantly cheating at world trade through shenanigans like these, the US economy is on the ropes and it will not take much to do significant harm--which it fully deserves in this case anyway

Dutch food watchdog issues warning on poisonous tea - Expatica

The Dutch food and consumer watchdog issued a warning Thursday about a batch of herbal tea imported from Bulgaria which may have been contaminated by a highly toxic nightshade plant.

The tea, supplied by Dutch herbal tea supplier Jacob Hooy, "has probably been contaminated by deadly nightshade, a plant that's dangerous to peoples' health," the NVWA said in a statement.

Three types of herbal tea called "marshmallow root", "bile cleansing herb" and "airways herb", sold at outlets in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam have been taken off the shelves.

"Shops have taken these teas off the shelves and people are advised not to drink it," the NVWA said.

It added it was unknown how deadly nightshade, which if ingested causes confusion, hallucinations and death, ended up in the herbal tea, which was imported from Bulgaria through a German supplier.

Logitech could dump video-conference arm in revamp

ZURICH (Reuters) - Logitech's chief executive said his company will decide within 90 days whether to sell the video-conferencing arm it bought in 2009 for $405 million after this week writing down the unit's value by more than half.

The LifeSize video conferencing unit has failed to shake up a market dominated by Cisco and Polycom and where Chinese giants Huawei and ZTE are making inroads, while global revenues in the segment have slid as economic uncertainty persists.

Any of the above four companies could be potential buyers for a small niche player in the $3 billion a year market, analysts said.

"This is such a tough market, and that's the biggest driver of the impairment," Logitech's newly anointed CEO Bracken Darrell told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"It's not an easy decision. Is this an asset that makes more sense for us to own or for someone else to own?" Darrell said, adding that the unit was well positioned for success among small and medium sized businesses.

The company also wants to sell its remote controls and digital video security businesses, and to develop more products for smartphones, touch-screen tablets, and for computer gamers.

"It's important to note we're going to shrink the company first and make it more profitable, and then focus on areas where we think we can grow," said Darrell after the company reported lower year-on-year sales for the fifth consecutive quarter.

"PC gaming is an area we haven't grown in because we didn't launch any new products, but we're going to do that now. Mice, keyboards, headsets," said Darrell, a former executive at household appliance maker Whirlpool.

Founded in a farmhouse near the small Swiss town of Romanel-sur-Morges in 1981, Logitech became a rising technology star when it marketed the first modern computer mouse, developed at the nearby Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.

Since then the Swiss-American company has shipped more than a billion mice and introduced a successful line-up of PC accessories including keyboards, cameras and speakers.

After peaking in 2007, Logitech shares have fallen more than 80 percent as the relentless rise of touch-screen tablets and smartphones packed with accessories gnawed away at sales of the mice and other plug-in peripherals Logitech had nurtured.

Darrell rejected the idea that add-on products were unlikely to attract users who increasingly want peripherals such as cameras built in to their smartphones and tablets, and said Logitech's 'mobile boombox' wireless speakers are now one of its top sellers, along with its iPad cover.

"We relaunched a keyboard cover, we call it the other half of the iPad, it's now our top selling product," Darrell said. "What we do seems to fit in this mobile space when we get it right."

Va. university lockdown ends; gun report a hoax

(AP) ? A lockdown at a Virginia university has been lifted after state police determined a report of a gunman on campus to be a hoax.

Virginia State Police Public Relations Director Corinne N. Geller said in a news release Wednesday night that police officers from various departments who flooded the campus following the initial report were leaving and the lockdown was being lifted.

Geller said that the UVA-Wise student called 911 shortly before 9 p.m. to report that he had seen an armed gunman on campus. She said police officers from the university, town, county and state immediately responded and began a building-by-building search while state police agents interviewed the student.

Geller said during that interview, "the student confessed that it was a hoax."

Concern over alliances between al-Qaida, Africa groups

In a first account of the hostage situation, the Algerian prime minister said Monday that the Islamic militants who attacked a BP facility in the Algerian desert were prepared to blow it up. At least 37 hostages and 29 militants are dead after Algerian special forces waged a counter-attack. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.

By Richard Engel and Robert WindremNBC News

In Texas on Tuesday, the FBI told Erin Lovelady that her father was one of three Americans who had been killed in the terrorist assault on an Algerian gas facility last week. The news destroyed a bit of his daughter's faith.

"My whole life he always told me that good things happen to good people and that I was a good person and good things were going to happen for me," she said Tuesday.

The grief of the Lovelady family is a poignant reminder of the growing concern among U.S. counterterrorism officials that the amorphous al-Qaida-affiliated groups contesting swathes of northern Africa are increasingly coordinating their strategy with al-Qaida central in Pakistan ?? the remnants of the terrorist organization founded by Osama bin Laden.

Victor Lovelady had gone overseas because the month-on, month-off schedule gave him more time to be with his family.

"He felt 100 percent comfortable going there and he wanted that, it was never about money, it was never about that, he was going to retire and you know ...," Erin Lovelady said, her voice trailing off.

Victor Lovelady was one of at least 37 foreign hostages executed by their captors or killed in the Algerian rescue mission.? The government in Algiers, aware that Western governments were angered by what they perceived as hurried decision-making on its part, released videotape on Tuesday of kidnappers carrying out executions.

"It should have been no surprise that the Algerians were going to be aggressive," said Michael Leiter, former director of the U.S. National Counter Terrorism Center and now an NBC News counterterrorism analyst. The Algerian government? couldn't afford to have prolonged hostage crisis in the midst of their southern gas fields that are crucial to its economy, he said.?

While analysts noted that the attacks did not affect the price of natural gas, they pointed out that the price of gas has already dropped and that any instability in Algeria would make negotiating with prospective partners or financiers more problematic.

?They had to consider that," Leiter said.

It's believed that two of the dead militants in the Algerian crisis are Canadian, driving the total number of people killed to 23 in a siege where extremists used rocket-propelled grenades and mortars. NBC's Keir Simmons reports that there are still an unknown number of Americans among the victims. 1

Now, with the Algerian standoff ended in a bloody massacre, U.S. and other Western officials are wondering where the terrorists will strike next. They note that with the death of the three Americans in Algeria, and the?killing of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others in Libya, al-Qaida in the Islamic Magreb (AQIM) has suddenly become the most active of the "affiliates" of the central terrorist organization founded by bin Laden.

They point to October's video message from bin Laden?s successor, al-Qaida central leader Ayman al-Zawahri? to al-Qaida affiliates, in which he suggested that they engage in kidnappings to free prisoners held in the West, particularly Omar Abdul Rahman. Rahman, the so-called blind sheikh imprisoned in the U.S. for his role in the 1993 conspiracy to topple the World Trade Center, was one of two convicted terrorists the Algeria hostage takers demanded in return for Americans they held and later killed.

The other was Aafia Siddiqui, convicted of planning attacks on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

Mokhtar bel Mokhtar, whose Signatories in Blood group claimed responsibility for the Algerian attack, has said that his organization been in touch with al-Qaida in Pakistan and that the assault on the natural gas plant was conducted on the umbrella group?s behalf.

Although there's no indication that AQIM is planning attacks on the U.S., there is intelligence suggesting that its members have planned attacks in France. That's one reason that France decided last week to move troops and arms into Mali to stop fundamental Islamists from reaching the capital of Bamako.

On Tuesday, the U.S. took another step in helping the French. American C-17s began transporting French troops and equipment to near the front line of the fighting in Mali. ? ?
