Nasri Apologizes Over Controversial Insults | Morocco World News

By Jamal Saidi

Morocco World News

Casablanca, June 28, 2012

French football player, Samir Nasri, has apologized for insulting a reporter after the defeat of his team by the Spanish team in the quarterfinals during Euro 2012. His outburst has made headlines for days.

?Too many untruths circulate at the moment. May the fans, and the children in particular, know that I regret sincerely that my words may have shocked,? the player wrote on Twitter, according to Reuters.

Nasri was involved in a foul-mouthed dispute with French reporters. His first provocative act was when he made a ?shush? gesture to journalists from ?L? Equipe,?- a French daily newspaper. The player did this after he scored the goal that tied a game against England, during France?s opening game of the Euro.

Nasri?s second incident with reporters occurred when a journalist asked for a statement. The following is the exchange between the player and the reporter:

Nasri: ?You are looking for shit, you are looking for trouble.?

Reporter: ?Well get lost, then ??

Nasri: ?You tell me to get lost? Come and we?ll sort it out over there.?

Reporter: ?That?s it ??

Nasri: ?F*** you, go f*** your mother, you son of a b****. F*** you, that way you can say I?m rude.?

The above exchange was the last straw that broke the camel?s back.

After this behavior, the French Sports minister Val?rie Fourneyron, ordered the French Football Federation to take necessary disciplinary action against the player for his poor behavior.

As a result of the inappropriate behavior the Federation is considering banning Nasri from playing for France for the next two years.

Aware of the risk he is facing, the player went on explaining his position. ?I love the French team, I love football and I have deep respect for the fans. For the rest, it?s a personal matter between me and some journalists. I will explain myself in due time,? Nasri said.

Study: E-book library borrowing takes slow pace

(AP) ? E-book readers have been relatively slow to borrow digital works from the library, frustrated by a limited selection and by not even knowing whether their local branch offers e-releases, according to a new study.

The Pew Research Center published a survey Friday that reports around 12 percent of e-book users 16 years and older downloaded a text from the library over the past year. Earlier in 2012, Pew issued a study showing that around 20 percent of adults had read an e-book recently.

Simon & Schuster, the Hachette Book Group and other major publishers have limited e-book offerings to libraries or refused to make any available, citing concerns that the ease of free downloads would hurt sales. Lack of awareness may be another factor. Around 60 percent of those 16 and older couldn't say whether their libraries had e-books.

Pew's Internet & American Life Project study, conducted with nearly 3,000 respondents between Nov. 16 and Dec. 11, 2011, suggests that library patrons trying to borrow digital texts have been deterred by the selection and by not having the right e-book device. Just over half of respondents said their library did not have the book they were looking for and nearly 20 percent found that the device they owned could not receive a given title.

Nearly half of those who have not borrowed an e-book said they would be "very" or "somewhat" interested if they were lent an e-reading device with a book already downloaded.

Officials from the American Library Association have been meeting with publishers in an effort to work out a system that would satisfy both sides. On Thursday, Penguin Group (USA) announced a pilot program with the New York and Brooklyn library systems that will make e-books available six months after they first go on sale. Penguin had suspended its e-book program with libraries last year.

"I applaud Penguin's decision today to re-start e-book sales to libraries so that we may again meet our mutual goals of connecting authors and readers," library association president Molly Raphael said in a statement.

One statistic reported by Pew should please publishers and librarians: Those who borrow e-books from libraries tend to read more ? 29 books a year ? than readers who don't use the library (23 books). But library card holders also are more likely to borrow, as opposed to buy, a book compared to those without library cards.

Overall, around half of those surveyed said they had bought their most recent book. Around 15 percent said they had borrowed a copy from the library.

Ranger falls to death during Mt. Rainier rescue

Elaine Thompson / AP, file

In this file image, a halo forms around Mount Rainier as a thin layer of clouds and blowing snow on the mountain are backlit as seen from Seattle, Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010.

By King 5 News and msnbc.com staff

A park ranger fell about 3,700 feet to his death on Mount Rainier in Washington state Thursday during an operation to rescue four climbers, NBC station King 5 reported.?The National Park Service identified the ranger as Nick Hall, 34, from Maine.?

A statement issued by the park said Hall fell from about 13,700 feet to 10,000 feet on Rainier's northeast side at 4:49 p.m. PT (7:49 p.m. ET) as he was helping two of the climbers evacuate the mountain by helicopter.

?He [Hall] did not respond to attempts to contact him and was not moving. High winds and a rapidly lowering cloud ceiling made rescue efforts extremely difficult, but with the help of Chinook helicopters from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, two of the original climbing party were lifted off the mountain by about 9 p.m. and taken to Madigan Hospital,? the statement said.

?

?

?The other two members of the party are spending the night on the mountain with climbing rangers from Mount Rainier National Park ? All four suffered non-life threatening injuries,? it added.

??Climbers reached Ranger Hall several hours after the incident began and found him to be deceased,? the statement said.

Read more news from King 5

The four climbers, from Waco, Texas, had been walking on the Emmons Glacier Route on their way down from the summit, when two of them slipped and fell into a crevasse at about 1:45 p.m. PT, Kevin Bacher, of Mount Rainier National Park, said.

One of the hikers had a working cell phone and was able to notify park rangers. Rescue crews on foot located the climbers and lifted the two men out of the crevasse, then began the process of transferring to the helicopter.

The statement said rescue and recovery efforts would resume Friday morning.

Law enforcement authorities hold a news conference to discuss the recovery of the body of the suspect involved in the shooting death of Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson.

Hall was a four-year veteran of Mount Rainier National Park's climbing program and a native of Patten, Maine.

On January 1, park ranger?Margaret Anderson was shot dead as she tried to stop Benjamin Colton Barnes,?a fleeing suspect, near the Longmire Ranger Station in Mount Rainier National Park.

Anderson is remembered on the National Park's Officer Down Memorial Page.

'Forest Boy' hoaxer had troubled life, friend says

A friend of 'Forest Boy', the Dutch man who hoaxed German authorities for nine months, has shed new light on the troubled background that may have led to his elaborate deceit, in an interview with NBC News.

By Carol Grisanti, NBC News

Robin van Helsum, the 'Forest Boy' who hoaxed German authorities for nine months with a fantasy about living rough in woods, was running away from a troubled background and financial concerns, his friend told NBC News.

Ray van Ravensberg, Robin's childhood friend, shed new light on the Dutchman whose story - and supposed mystery identity - flummoxed police in Berlin and attracted headlines around the world.?

Van Helsum's scam was exposed last week after he was identified by his step-mother in The Netherlands following the distribution of a police photograph.?

Van Ravensberg said?Robin, who ran away from home in Hengelo,?a Dutch town near the border with Germany last September,?came from a broken home, did not get along with his step mother and fought constantly with his father, who was very strict.

"He started to stop with school and stop with work and the only thing he did was sitting on the computer and yeah, just screwing around."

'Forest Boy' mystery solved: Man admits lies over identity

Van Ravensberg said Robin moved out of the house and went for "room training"- a Dutch program where teenagers with problems at home, are put into a government care program and live with groups of people their own age from similar backgrounds - a type of youth hostel.

But then Robin got into more trouble, becoming a loner, spending hours on the computer and argued with the owners of the hostel because he could no longer pay his bills.

"His life was really complicated," van Ravensberg said as he struggled to explain his friend. "He doesn?t have anything like I do- he doesn?t have parents who will cover [him] if [he's] in financial debt, like I do. [My parents] will help me, I can talk to them."

Van Ravensberg went on to explain that a young woman? who Robin dated a few times, perhaps for some financial help, became pregnant.

"First she said she was a few weeks pregnant but she was already pregnant for a longer period of time and he didnt want to have the child and she wanted to keep it."

That might have been the turning point for Robin. Shortly afterwards, he ran away determined to escape and start a new life somewhere, somehow.

'Forest boy' mystery: Stumped German police release photo

Van Ravensberg said Robin is really smart and proved it by staying nine months in Germany without getting caught.

When he arrived in Germany, Robin told the police his name was Ray and he was a 17 yr-old orphan - that?s all he could remember.

The 'Forest Boy' was convincing. The Germans were intrigued by his story and provided him with care. The fantasy about living rough for five years in the German forests was so heart-rending that his became an international sensation. No one thought he could have made it up. But he did.

Van Ravensberg defended his old friend. "It started with his own life. He already had complications and it became more and more- financial, girlfriend, child and yeah his bucket was way too full."

"He just wanted to have a new bucket."

UK to import Icelandic deep geothermal energy

The UK has signed an energy agreement with Iceland, which will enable Iceland's volcanoes to supply deep geothermal energy to the UK.

As part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed last week, the two countries have pledged to share information on the development of the UK's deep geothermal sector and explore potential electricity interconnection between Iceland and the UK.

It will also see the pair share information of the development of its oil and gas industries, including offshore drilling.

It is hoped that the MoU, signed by energy minister Charles Hendry and his Icelandic minister Oddn? G. Har?ard?ttir, will strengthen the two countries' relationship on energy issues, including the development of geothermal power, greater use of interconnectors to transport energy under the sea, and developing oil and gas resources.

Mr Hendry said: "This sort of approach can both enhance our energy security and deliver low carbon electricity in an affordable way."
However, the Renewable Energy Association (REA) said while it welcomes greater collaboration on renewable energy that the MoU must not "derail" the UK's deep geothermal industry.

REA head of external affairs Leonie Greene, said: "It is important that the UK Government doesn't overlook the UK's own deep geothermal resource, which could supply up to 20% of electricity needs and the majority of our heat needs.

"Not only is it cost effective to develop our own capacity, it provides energy security by protecting us from instability in international energy markets, and it keeps jobs and revenues in the UK economy."

As a result, the REA is calling on the Government to back British engineering and ensure UK deep geothermal is supported and that it doesn't rely on imports alone.

After Nigeria plane crash, families mourn; government suspends airline

Mourners silently walked between rows of the dead from a plane crash in Nigeria that killed the 153 people aboard the airliner and others on the ground, peering into burned faces in hopes of claiming the remains of their loved ones on Tuesday.

Those in grief passed by more than a dozen bodies able to be recognized by sight alone in a Lagos hospital parking lot. Onlookers wore surgical masks to block out the smell. As family members softly wept and held each other, Nigeria's government announced Tuesday it has indefinitely suspended Dana Air's license, grounding the carrier that operated the MD-83 airplane that crashed in the country's largest city and now faces widespread public anger.

"We are without eyes," said Jennifer Enanana, as she sobbed in the parking lot over the death of her younger brother in the crash. She had lost another brother within the year. "We don't have anybody that will protect us that can stand like a man and defend us. Dana stole him."

The MD-83 went down in Lagos' Iju-Ishaga neighborhood, about nine kilometers (five miles) from Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The area has grown dramatically over the decades since British colonialists first established an airstrip there, as Lagos surges toward becoming the largest city in Africa.

That population pressure has seen homes, business and industrial sites shoot up along the approach route used by aircraft landing at the airport, changing what used to be forests and wetlands into a sprawling megacity. The development has put the population there at risk with many aviation disasters in Nigeria over the last two decades. Emergency workers fear a number of on-the-ground deaths from Sunday's crash that saw the aircraft slam into two apartment buildings, a printing press and a woodworking shop.

Engine problems eyed after passenger jet crashes in Nigeria suburb

By midday Tuesday, searchers had recovered 150 bodies, according to Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. It's not yet known how many people died on the ground. Emergency workers were still looking through the debris for bodies, and one damaged building seemed on the verge of collapse.

Fearful family members who once crowded the neighborhood arrived Tuesday to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where authorities had placed the 43 identifiable bodies so far collected from the crash.

Professor David Oke, the chief medical director of the hospital, told the dozens of relatives and diplomats gathered there that at least 29 had already been identified, including the corpses of a Chinese citizen and a Canadian.

Federal and state authorities have discussed using DNA testing to identify other bodies, though that likely would require massive assistance from laboratories outside of the country.

"We are aware there are more coming in and there are some bodies in our other hospital ... that are really burnt beyond recognition and may eventually need more forensic assessment," Oke said.

Outside the hospital, Ugonna Nwoka said his uncle had been aboard the Dana Air flight that went down in a congested neighborhood on Sunday, turning much of it to rubble. The uncle, who worked for the country's aviation ministry, suddenly needed to travel to Lagos and picked the Dana flight, Nwoka said.

Nwoka said he tried to go to the crash site on Monday but was pushed away by security forces.

"We stayed for hours trying to plead to see what happened," Nwoka said. Asked why he needed to see the crash site, Nwoka said if he didn't it would be "all like a dream, like a drama, like it's not real."

Popular anger has risen in the country against the airline since the crash. On Tuesday, the Nigerian government indefinitely suspended Dana Air's license to fly in Africa's most population nation, said Joe Obi, a spokesman for the country's aviation ministry. Obi said officials took the action as a safety precaution.

PhotoBlog: Smoldering scene in Lagos, Nigeria after plane crash

Officials with Dana Air could not be immediately reached for comment. A statement posted to the company's website described the airline as "professionally managed," saying the flight's captain had logged 18,500 flight hours, with 7,100 hours on an MD-83.

Dana Air said the plane that crashed had its last safety inspection on May 30 and was certified to fly by Nigerian regulators. However, oversight remains lax in oil-rich Nigeria, whose government remains hobbled by mismanagement and corruption.

The cause of the crash on a sunny, clear Sunday afternoon remains unclear. The crew radioed the tower that they had engine trouble shortly before the plane went down.

Late Monday, emergency workers recovered both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, said Tunji Oketunbi, a spokesman for the Accident Investigation Bureau, which probes airplane crashes in Nigeria.

"We will take them abroad for decoding and that will help our analysis," Oketunbi said Tuesday. "We will know what happened to the aircraft shortly before it crashed."

An investigator from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board also was expected to join Nigerian authorities on Tuesday to help them determine a cause for the crash, Oketunbi said.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said that seven American citizens were killed in the crash. Some, he said, were dual U.S.-Nigerian citizens, but he could not provide more details. He said the notification of next of kin is ongoing.

A woman from West Hartford, Conn., her husband and four young children died on board the flight. Neighbors identified the family as Maimuna Anyene, her Nigerian husband Onyeke, and their children, a 5 month old, 1-year-old twins and a 3 year old.

Americans Josephine Onita and Jennifer Onita of Missouri City, Texas also were killed in the crash, their sister said. She said her sisters were heading to Lagos to attend a wedding.

Others killed in the crash included at least four Chinese citizens, two Lebanese nationals and one French citizen, officials have said.

Nintendo: two Wii U Gamepads will work on one system (update 2: but at a cost - and now with video)

Nintendo two Wii U Gamepads will work on one system

Nintendo broke a few hearts when it initially said the Wii U would only support one of its unique Gamepads. Much to our delight, the company just said in its live keynote that the final console will support two. As such, it'll be possible to have truly equal two-player games instead of relegating a friend to the old-fashioned Wii remote and Nunchuk. Of course, how much that extra Gamepad will cost we have yet to know -- along with whether or not it'll be possible to have strictly Gamepad-to-Gamepad titles that skip the TV entirely. We expect to find out soon.

Update: In a follow-up, Nintendo Japan has posted on Twitter that there's a price to pay if two Gamepads are active. Frame rates drop to about 30 fps if two are active; any games that really want that extra controller won't be quite as glass-smooth. On the upside, it's possible to switch one off with a smooth transition; there won't be a need for theatrics just to switch to a solo game.

Update 2: Nintendo has put out a video tour of the Gamepad that you can check out after the break.

Officials: CIA drone targets al-Qaida's No. 2

(AP) ? A CIA drone strike Monday targeted al-Qaida's second in command, Abu Yahia al-Libi, in Pakistan, but it was unclear whether he was among those hit, U.S. officials said.

Fewer than five people were hit in two days of strikes in Pakistan during a period of a half-dozen strikes in less than two weeks, as the U.S. pushed ahead with the controversial drone program despite Pakistani demands to stop. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the classified drone program.

U.S. officials said they did not know yet whether al-Libi was among those killed, but said they were "optimistic."

Al-Libi would be the latest in the dozen-plus senior commanders removed in the clandestine U.S. war against al-Qaida since Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden last year.

The White House maintains a list of terrorist targets to be killed or captured, compiled by the military and the CIA and ultimately approved by the president.

The State Department's Rewards for Justice program had set a $1 million reward for information leading to the Libyan-born fugitive, who had filmed numerous propaganda videos urging attacks on U.S. targets after he escaped a prison at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in 2005.

Al-Libi took the second-in-command spot when Egyptian-born Ayman al-Zawahri took charge of al-Qaida after bin Laden's death. As al-Qaida's de facto general manager, al-Libi oversaw the group's day-to-day operations in Pakistan's tribal areas and managed outreach to al-Qaida's regional affiliates.

"This is one of the more prominent names" among the targets of drone strikes in Pakistan, which helps bolsters the CIA's push to continue the drone program despite the continued political resistance from Pakistan and collateral damage, added former CIA officer Paul Pillar.

Al-Libi's death would be "another reason not to accept Pakistan's demand for an end to drone wars," added Brookings Institute's Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer and adviser to the White House on Afghanistan and Pakistan policy.

Dennis Santiago: Credit Unions Just Got a Little More Transparent

In December 2009, my friend Arianna Huffington called with this idea to educate "ordinary" people about the financial system. At the time, I directed Institutional Risk Analytics to prepare and launch a pro bono zip code tool to search for best of breed small and mid-sized banks. We called that project "Move Your Money". The tool has been running ever since and, as of today, has been used over 1.3 million times and counting.

For people needing detailed information about banks, the "Move Your Money" tool is backed up by a commercial system that extracts professional analytics from IRA's Professional Bank Monitor risk analysis engine and packages into an online shopping cart for consumers. The cart system itself owes its origin to a challenge from the good folks at CBS Evening News back in 2008 to explain the arcane world of banking in terms consumers could do something with at a reasonable price compared to what one charges a Wall Street investment house for such math grinding information. Distilling thousands of reporting numbers into simple letter grades was the result.

From the outset of "Move Your Money", consumer demand to see performance and risk information on credit unions came roaring through the grapevine. People love credit unions which they see as a socially responsible alternative to being a bank customer. What's not to like about a place that calls your deposit dollar a "share" in the collective.

But it takes time to study these institutions behavior patterns and the patterns of their regulating authority, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). The rules are different and the metrics are not directly comparable to the norms and expectations imposed on banks by the Banking Act gaggle of regulators at the FDIC, FFIEC, OCC, OTS and Fed. For long-term solutions to a long term crisis, I decided it was better to take the time to study things in a considered fashion. And that included a painstaking process to gather an understanding of what systemic issues credit unions pose.

Strangely, professional demand for transparency about credit unions remains nil in the world of Wall Street. No traded securities you see. But competitively, banks have noted that an increasing number of credit unions have taken on business models that compete directly with community banks for the same customers and that's begun to make them want to get a bead on these competitors a might more.

So after much bleary eyed staring at NCUA 5300 reports and talking to all manner of people about what keeps them up at night about credit unions, on June 1, 2012 Institutional Risk Analytics released our first credit union performance summary reports into our online tools systems. There are roughly 6,100-plus of them spanning some large institutions to truly small credit "unions" in the original sense of the description of these entities. Like IRA's bank engine, coverage is 100 percent. If it reports to its regulator, there's an IRA report on it. What does a portion of one of these look like?

With this first iteration of IRA analytics, you can see if they are making money. Not all do. You can see what their cost of doing business looks like. You can get a picture of their lending base, any trouble that may be in it, and how well protected the members are from troubled loans. You can see how much they are investing and, of those investments, how much are actually deposits in the banks. You can see how exposed they are to a somewhat troubled group of entities known as Corporate Credit Unions that require special assessment stabilization subsidies to stay afloat right now. And you can see to what degree they have certain types of key subsidiary investments in something called a Credit Union Service Organization (CUSO), these are entities similar to the mortgage and credit card servicing units at banks. Some of the measures we have synthesized appear like the bank measures used by IRA. This is to help professionals analyze and compare CU's to banks more easily. No it was not easy to get them to be somewhat comparable given the differences in regulatory philosophy in play.

What does appear to emerge is that credit unions are on average somewhat more expensive to operate than banks. Many of them are stellar operations worthy of people's money. Still, not all of them are well run businesses but then again neither are all banks. Management philosophy runs the gamut and their asset allocation strategies are as varied as their bank cousins. The bottom line is that it is not a homogeneous industry and the industry deserves as much scrutiny by its members as banks do by their customers. As of today, it's not as opaque as it used to be.

Note that for the time being, the quality filter strips out the riskier banks from the zip code lists that marks the consumer protection aspect of the "Move Your Money" tool remains disabled for credit unions in the MYM free site. The MYM Courtesy CU finder tool shows all of them. I'm still working on that part.
